My front pass-through compartment doors had two latches on them, one was a thumb lock and the other a key lock. To keep them air/water tight, you had to turn both latches. I got tired of always having to find my key to open the doors, so I came up with a simple solution. Why not add a third latch in the middle for the key and just make the two outer ones thumb latches! While I was at it, I changed the keyed latch to one that matches my door key. Now I can keep my compartment doors closed and sealed without a key while stationary and I only need one key to lock/unlock everything on my trailer.
This mod is actually very easy to do. The trick is to use a piece of duct tape over one of the existing holes to make a pattern for the double-D hole that you need for the new lock. Then once you line up the tape for the new hole, I used a step drill to bore out the hole to 5/8" (the size for the flats on the lock) and then just used a small round file to work my way up to the rest of the hole.
I purchased the latches/locks from
