Door/Step Handle UpGrade

Has anyone upgraded the door/step handle on a Jay Feather? We have the small black plastic handle that measures about 6-8".

What is the process? Is there aluminum to drill into down the wall/door edge? I do not want to drill and find that there is nothing solid behind the wall. Is there a brand that you recommend?

I am considering the full size arm that swings closed in travel. Thank you!

I would email Jayco along with your VIN and ask for the framing drawings, they will email back a PDF. Hopefully it will show whats along side the door for framing to attach to.

I did this. Jayco replied with the wall drawings and specs. It turns out that there is steel in the wall, and the rep said there should be no problem with the grab bar install. Once again, I received incorrect information from the dealer. They told me that it could not be done since there was nothing solid in the wall.

I ordered a black Dometic unit that swings left and right for storage and travel. We are excited to get it installed.

Just be sure that you DO NOT install the handle like the dealership did on our brand new trailer. I wanted it installed before we brought it home and I was assured they had done many of these. Well long story, and the story is not the only thing long, the tech came to inform us that they had drilled completely through the wall and proceeded to use screws that were to long to install it !!! Yes I was upset . They cut the screws off and puttied the holes. These are in a somewhat hidden location and I felt it was better to just go with it than risk having them try to replace the panel. So my advice, mark your drill bit with masking tape and DO NOT exceed that mark. I am sure most here know this but, appearently the tech did not !!

Don't pre drill the holes just use self tapping screws that are not to long, simple and easy.
