Chevy - Tow / Haul not working - FIXED
So two times ago when I went out my Tow/Haul button was working intermittently, last week when I went out it didnt work at all. A quick google search and I found out many folks have an issue were the wire just gets worn and breaks apart from the daily stress of moving around. I pulled my column apart tonight and sure enough it was broken. I spliced and soldered the wires back together -- they are darn small - like 20g. Not sure how long it will last, but we will see. Next time it goes out my guess is I will need a new shift lever assembly - it runs about $75.
Here is what it looks like -- there is a little orange wire coming out of the shift lever that runs down the column and plugs in to a socket under the dash.

ps; I'll have to remember that in the event that my GM Tow/Haul acts up.

Same goes for the older Super Duty trucks (99-05) the O/D button is on the end of the lever. The wire would simply break due to flexing. Hoping the newer trucks have addressed this issue.

Yep...you have to lower the shift lever to get the dash apart and get the column cover off....best to have the emergency brake set ....so.....you have to have the key engaged....plus - you have to be able to listen to tunes while you work!

Good to know this, Terry. Just hope I don't have to repeat it on my truck but if I do, at least I will have an idea where to start rather than paying the dealer two or three hundred bucks to do it. Thanks.

I always leave the key on when working on electrical. If you do something wrong, you get instant notification. :hihi:

I`ve had my dash apart a few times as well, to install a radio or to pull/install the instrament cluster and as Terry said on that particular style of Chevy you must turn on the ignition and pull down the shifter to get the dash cover off.

Yep...If you let the magical blue smoke out of the electronics, they will not work any more.
