Not sure what you mean by bar will not release. Is it the coupler (the latch on the top of the ball part), one of the bars on the side that take up the weight for distribution or what. A picture with your pointing at the problem area might help.

I have a stuck hitch (not Reese) in the past and jacking up the trailer tongue, pulling the car forward or backing up while the trailer is fully chocked are all ways to shake it loose. Try one at a time. Jacking up the tongue takes stress off the WDH parts. Back and forward, one at a time may loosen the ball on the tongue latch.

If the problem still exists, please take a photo and attach it to your forum post so we can better see what you are dealing with.

note: use the 'Go Advanced' button, at the bottom of your new entry, to see the option to attach a photo (looks like a paperclip)

If it's the ball not releasing, put the TV in drive and let it go forward a bit. That'll release the lock on the ball in the tongue.

Let me see if I got this right. You have a weight distribution hitch with chain and you cannot disconnect it from your tow vehicle.
Which of these is true:
A) The chain is tight and you cannot loosen it, so you cannot disconnect your trailer?
B) The chain is loose and you cannot remove the swing arms to disconnect your trailer?
  1. cannot disconnect at trailer end
  2. cannot disconnect at tow vehicle end
C) other ________________

Here is a link from etrailer with instructions about how to disconnect a Reese Distribution Hitch. Please explain a bit more when a problem occurs: https://www.etrailer.com/question-32327.html

To make the hitching process much easier I would suggest you get rid of that hand cranked tongue jack and install a good power tongue jack…worth every penny.

Sounds like you cannot disconnect the swing arms. Since the chains are loose there's no distribution pressure on the ball. If you raise the hitch you should be able to get it off the ball. That should work. If not, you should still have the final option pull the pin and move your vehicle forward... at least you can separate that way. Then when your ready to leave, just backup and drop hitch back onto the ball, or plug the hitch back into your vehicle and reinsert the pin. When convenient run it over to a local rv shop and ask for some advice.

If nothing above works, please explain why you can't raise it off the ball or why you can't remove the hitch-pin and pull the hitch out of your hitch receiver... please be verbose.
