Question for you new Ford Ranger owners: Spare tire carrier

Question for any of you that may own a newer Ford Ranger (2019+). I was following my daughter as she was driving our 2021 Ranger yesterday and I could see something moving under the back of the truck. The spare tire is tight and firmly in place. However, the chain from the spare tire carrier is hanging down through the center of the wheel. It is far enough down that you can see it easily.

If you happen to own one of these trucks, could you take a quick look at the spare tire and tell me how this chain is supposed to be routed? I can't imagine that this is where it should be. We've never had the spare down on this truck. So, it apparently was this way from when we got it new and we just never noticed it.

I've also posted this over on a Ford owner's site. But, I'm hoping that maybe one of you here may have one and could take a look for me.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I don't have a Ranger, but every truck I've owned has had a cable for the lift mechanism. I wonder if that chain is designed to run through the wheel holes and get padlocked for theft security. I'd maybe drop the tire down to see if one end that chain is welded to the frame.

I've used an aircraft cable on our last four trucks, wrapped over a frame cross member.

From what I've been able to gather, this is the new style winch system. Someone replied to me over on the Ford site a little while ago and said that theirs look the same. I've never seen anything like it.

Mine looks like that. No worries
(I've had the spare tire down a few times also).
If you have not lowered/raised the spare tire, I'd suggest a practice run in the driveway rather than learning how on the roadside. It is a little bit of a process

Excellent. Thank you for the reply.

Yes, I will definitely get that spare down to see how that contraption works. By your description, it sounds like I'm in for a treat.....LOL

And have some appropriate lube handy. Those things get ignored enough. You want to make sure it actually functions when you really need it.
