Real World Payload - RAM 3500 DRW

Hit the scales on a recent trip and learned, much to my dismay, that we're way overweight on the truck. I estimated pin weight at 3300 lbs (20% of GVWR) but we came in at just under 4100 lbs. Needless to say, we need to go to a DRW...

I know what the RAM website says for payload, but curious what real world numbers are. Going to have to order a truck and don't want to make an expensive mistake.

If responding please include the year and trim level.

Thanks in advance!

Great pin weight information.

If you get a chance feel free to post your CAT scale loaded pin weight results at the following "What's Your Scaled Tongue Tongue/Pin Weight" thread:

Same truck as yours, just a little older. Options on the rig are slide toppers, second awning, dual pane windows and residential fridge.

Had a few extras in the rig basement because we were on the road for five weeks, but nothing that was super heavy. I know it all adds up, but didn't it was that much.

I was watching a YouTube video some weeks ago. This guy with our same model unit, full timers, gave a tour of the outside/inside of unit while being interviewed. He did the part 1/outside. The MS did the inside. He did not have a generator but had a fairly extensive solar with multiple batteries, and all the storage compartments were all crammed with stuff. he then was asked about his towing rig. I rewound it 3 times, and then called my bride to listen, and yes, he was pulling with an F-250!! What is your 5th wheel model? That is part of the reason I went with the AUH, weight. My truck has 3963 pounds payload, 4000 in round numbers, and although the Fiver is loaded, we still won't have it loaded to its max GVWR.

Sorry, just saw your signature!!! How does it tow? I am adding hydraulic brakes to mine as soon as we can get an installer here. Brake kit is sitting in the shop.

Generator and W/D? That's a heavy pin weight for that trailer.

2019 Ram 3500 M/C dually Limited: 5100 Ilb's Payload. Max Towing=34100 Ilb's. Numbers are rounded down a few pounds. Way more truck than our Eagle needs but I love the peace of mind.

Even though I'm good on my weight I have been thinking about get a 3500 dually, if I see one that I like I might go ahead and get it but finding the one I want is slim.

My wife know that I want one and she will say go and get it, now that's the kind of wife I love, lol.

I can't figure out why my pin is so heavy as while the basement is full the stuff in it isn't that heavy. I understand that even the little things add up, but even so.

No washer/dryer or generator in there to add to the weight either.

This post reminds me of the first camping trip I took my brand new NP on. I was checking in at an rv resort in OR and an older gentleman pulls in with about a 2012-2015 pinnacle with Canadian plates on it. I think the 5thwheel was a 38 to 40 footer. Anyway this gentleman was pulling with a mid 2000's like 2010ish 2500hd chevy 4x4 duramax. I asked him how much over weight he was. His response was don't know never scaled it he said he has done a trip from Canada to AZ and back once a year all loaded up and has never had a problem. The truck pulls and stops the load just fine. He saw what I had and I was nervous about pulling my 43 foot NP with a band new 3500 HD srw. He was like no problem with that truck. I run about 600 lbs over on my gvwr and it's all on the rear Axl. I've been hauling this thing all over the country. I added airbags just for stability (I was gonna do this anyway and honestly would have added them even if I had a DRW). I also bumped up to a heavier rated tire more or less for piece of mind. Anyway my point is back in the day manufacturers didn't put weight capacities on trucks. The old timers just loaded them up until the frame was on the axles. Now guys are so worried about a few hundred pounds. Fact is dose your truck handle the load and are you comfortable with the load. If you are don't loose sleep. If your are not comfortable then go to a DRW. Real world is there isn't an rv that isn't custom built today that a modern DRW can't pull with ease. Real world is 5 to 6k lbs is no problem and will likely not squatt your truck even to the level point. Today's trucks are absolutely amazing with what they are capable of. Good luck

There's 2 pieces of information you didn't include with your with your truck description, engine and drivetrain. I'm assuming diesel and 4x4, so using that combination, your current truck has a payload rating of 4,330 pounds. At 4,100 pounds, you're under, but just barely.

I'm getting these figures from Ram trucks. Here's a link to the page that lists every configuration for 2-17 Ram 3500 trucks including axle weights, payload, GCWR and max trailer weight rating.

Hope this helps.

I think your truck has more payload that you listed. If you go here, https://www.ramtrucks.com/towing/towing-guide.html you can click on look up my vehicle, input your trucks VIN and it should tell you the exact payload. Older trucks, Ram FCA has all the numbers listed in PDF files.

That is not your GVWR. GVWR includes the weight of the truck and the payload. The number on the sticker would be the payload.

Look at this. https://www.dualliner.com/blog/what-does-gvw-mean

I agree.. most 1 ton srw's in the 2015 to 2019 are in the 11k to 12500 gvwr range. And depending on equipment you should be between 3500 and 4200 for payload. The new srw's are now into the mid to upper 12k range for gvwr with 3800 to 4800 payload. A 1 ton DRW normally gets you about 1000 to 1500 lbs more payload capacity.

that isn't your GVWR that is your pay load.

Also you realize this sticker assumes empty truck with driver the way it left the factory and is basically useless. The real dot sticker typically white gives you gvw info. GVWR - scale weight to give you real info on your avaliable payload.

every tool, hitch, mudflap, bedliner, lights etc impact this sticker.

Yeah lol, I meant payload. And yes I know what it does and doesn't account for. Thanks
