Replacing a programmed "Chip" key
Any MH or TV built in the last 15 or 20 years uses a programmed chip key. They come new with 2 keys and you can self-program a 3d key for backup but the kicker is you need both of your original keys to do it. The process is simple and you can get a blank key online for $20 or less and have it "cut" at a local hardware store. If you loose one of your keys and have to go back to the dealer for a replacement be prepared to fork over as much as $150 for the programming and the key. It would probably cost the manufacturer about 10cents per vehicle to supply that 3 key on a new $50 to $150k vehicle but that is another issue.
Big box home improvement stores and many hardware stores now have the ability to supply a replacement key that will start your vehicle for around $75 but it is what is known as a cloned key [copies the 1 original you have] rather than reprogramming a new key with all the info needed to support the on-board self programming feature. That's ok since it is a lot cheaper than a new key at a dealer but the whole problem can be solved by buying a blank key online and using the self-programming feature on your vehicle BEFORE YOU LOSE ONE OF YOUR KEYS.
Ask me how I know all this!!
