I have tried s of that and even had someone stronger than me look at it. He looked at the rust and said there was really not problem leaving them on but if I wanted them off he could cut them off. I may do that in the fall and start over with new shackles

Just a thought.... would stainless steel quick links work for you?
5/16" (8mm) Quick Link has a Working Load Limit (WLL) of 2400lbs. WLL is determined from the Breaking Load (BL) of 12100lbs with a safety factor of 5:1.
Because I have an extended shank, I use 4 of these, 2 per side. They've been on my truck since 2006 and never seized up.

My brother removed the s hooks and threads the chain up and over the hitch and fastens them together with a heavy duty lock.
May be illegal, I don't know but it is secure.

I wanted to try that and I was trying to get in touch with the state to confirm but they have been busy

I use D-ring shackles rated at 28 ton and a break strength at 9,500 lbs.......(this not a crusade) BECAUSE, if the coupler should ever come off the ball, shank or ball failure, etc, the only thing keeping your trailer from.......think of the worst case scenario......is the connection of your safety chains to your tow vehicle. Any short cut here just doesn't make much sense, considering the consequences, as unlikely as they may be. Especially since it doesn't cost a lot of dough for a very robust connection.

I agree with you on the connectors and I did buy mine so that one shackle could handle the load. However with a moral dring the opening does not work which is why the hybrid system I have of a shackle and a dring. I have another post with pictures. Here is that post. https://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f...ins-49914.html. BTW I am wearing some rockin shoes in that post.
