The Cummins in a Dodge will always be slightly louder than the V8 offerings from Ford and GM. In-line sixes are inherently a little louder but also a little more efficient.

Trying to find a 2-wheel drive with an 8' bed is not easy either.

Just my biased opinion but if you're pulling a tt/5vr there will be times that you'll appreciate the additional traction of a 4wd (wet grass?).

I don't need a 4-wheel drive.

My 2009 Dodge had the Bluetec system that did not use DEF. It also had a VGT turbo. The system was not good for long life, but, it got decent mileage and had good power. It was a bit noisy. Not horrible, but, irritating for a long day on the road.

Contrary to popular beliefs, the new quieter Diesel engines are not because of the EGR, DPF, or use of DEF. rather they are quieter on the front side of the combustion, they are using HPCR injection systems (high pressure common rail) which is designed to shoot multiple “pilot shots” of fuel into the cylinder instead of a single larger shot of fuel, resulting in quieter combustion. It also results in a cooler combustion temps and better emissions, finer misting of fuel into the chamber, and better efficiency.
The EGR, DPF, and all the rest of the emission decrease the performance and kill the fuel mileage on these trucks with such great engines.

My 2017 Cummins is an absolute joy to drive especially on long trips whether empty or towing. It is considerably quieter than my previous Tundra ever was. Towing at 68-70 mph, there is never a time where it gets loud so you have to raise your voice to talk to anyone in the truck. Could be mainly because it rarely goes out of 6th gear and stays under 2000 rpm's! The Tundra would be in 4th gear at 3000+ towing at 60-62 mph. That got annoying real fast so we never towed more than 3 hours. With the Ram, a 7 hour tow (our longest yet) was very relaxing and enjoyable.

Same experience here as well. Just different makes. The new trucks are so quiet.

LOL I just noticed this comment. My factory new 2009 Cummins was loud enough I would turn it off when at a drive through window.

I want to do the exact opposite. I've got a fever, a fever for more engine and turbo whine!
That being said i can't complain at all about the noise on my 2017, it's just loud enough to know you're driving a diesel but don't have to jack up the radio to hear it.

Lol I agree with you.
I live for turbo whistle and black smoke.... I grew up listening to old 2 stroke Detroits, 350 Cummins and 3406 Cats and dying to be a truck driver. My first word was “tuck”, and the fascination has never worn off.

So, you could do what the shop did to 2009 Dodge. Cheetah VGT turbo with new exhaust manifold and turbo back 5" exhaust, resonator only and all emissions removed. Chipped with a 5 position switch. If you run at the more aggressive settings then you might want to have the head studs replaced as well
THe Cheetah's have a nice whine and good rumble when rolling. When idling the exhaust sounds like an old Kirby vacuum cleaner.
And, you can get more aggressive. Dual turbos. Separate turbo and exhaust brake. Etc.
If you tow with a 'smoker' you'll have black down the side of your trailer, DAMHIK.

I love my powerstroke as a 600 horse DD, but I agree, there’s nothing like a tuned up 6BT/ISB Cummins. My old 12 valve puts out about 350/800 and sounds like pure diesel heaven doing it.
And I can’t wait to see the soot stains down the passenger side of my 5th wheel!

Count me in the crowd that very much dislikes those obnoxious, clattering, smoking diesels of the past. Double my disdain if you are pulling in to an otherwise serene campground.
Several days ago I was two vehicles behind a stinker, no thank you. I'll give up a few MPG for the current batch of modern diesel buggies.

Speaking of smells. My 2015 Mercedes Sprinter burns very clean obviously. However, it constantly smells like skunk near the exhaust. This is my first diesel with DEF and I'm assuming that is what causes that smell. All my other diesels are pre emissions. Does anyone else smell something similar with their DEF equipped diesels?

I have a 17 ram and my friend has a 16 ford and his is a lot more quiet. If it was not for the emblem you would not now its a diesel.

I have a 13 Ram and it is the quietest truck I have ever owned. I can have a conversation with my wife at normal voice levels. Now I have a quad cab long bed so my exhaust is much further away than a regular cab 6 foot. You will always get some rattle from a diesel. I even got that on my VW Jettas and Taurag. I can't speak for Ford or Chevy, but I stayed away from the 07-12 Rams because I didn't like the exhaust treatment. It made for poor fuel economy, oil dilution and frequent oil changes. Once the DEF was introduced, the fuel economy went up, the power went up and the oil change intervals went up. The small price of DEF is very offset with these savings.

Does the DEF have a separate tank?

Yes, sometimes I can smell the DEF. Not very often, only when absolutely no wind and no other 'smells' masking it and standing right next to the exhaust. IIRC it was when the engine was cold as well.
PS for the OP. Go out and drive a few of the diesels. See for yourself which ones are noisier than others.
