Black splatter on wheel

On our way to Fort Wilderness from Cincinnati OH, and find a black greasy substance splattered on one wheel. Any idea what it is, and how bad is it: critical as in stop right now, bad as in fix it at Disney, or ok to wait until we get back home.
Thanks.

That is excess axle grease being slung out of the hub. Look inside and see if you see any coming from the rear seal.

Wipe it off with a solvent and monitor the hub temps. I would have the bearings/hub inspected.

I have one of two wheels that got spattered from grease coming from the hub. I bought new rubber covers (the item that covers the zerk fitting in your pic) to replace mine since the one wheel with the spatter had a tear in it. I would follow norty1's advice to monitor. I placed my hand on both the left and right hubs to make sure the temp were similar. I made a trip to Lake Superior and back from SW Michigan with no problems. My spatter started right after I greased mine and noticed the tear.

That is a miniscule amount of grease compared to what is in your wheel hub. Don't worry about it. Just monitor it and fix it when you get back home.

Its a long trip back from Florida to Ohio - I would do as Norty says but have it checked PRIOR to heading home...

Camping World in Valdosta Georgia is taking care of us. We walked in unannounced and they jumped right on it. Best service we've experienced in the rv industry so far.

Now I need to figure how to move this dealership back to Cincinnati so I can always deal with them.

X2. Worry if it gets worse or if there's excessive grease coming out the deal on the inside face of the hub.

Just be sure to check your brakes, though. My 32BHDS had that issue, and was overgreased such that it coated the brakes and they didn't work. Verify they work, and also, snag an infrared temp gun to monitor the hub temps between stops.

Make sure the brakes are not dragging. This condition could produce excessive heat liquefying the grease cause it to leak. ( you may smell the brakes also)

Temps stayed the same the whole time. Camping World said they only had to replace a little bit of grease. We start the trip home in 2 days, so we'll see how it goes.

How do you do an "easy" fix on this. I'm taking my TT back in for the exact same problem under warranty. This will be my 3d attempt at getting it fixed. My warranty will run out before next camping season.

The only "Fix" is to replace the seals. It makes sense at that point to repack or replace your bearings at the same time. Not overly difficult just a little time consuming and if you are mechanically squeamish a bit intimidating. If you have some mechanical skills it's a pretty straightforward job...

I responded to this back on Aug. 22nd (post #3). I've added a picture of what I bought on Ebay (and finally installed today). I lubed them again today as well since I had it up on jacks to remove the wheels to put new tires on (replacing the 9+ year old tires that came with it when I bought the camper this past December). It's next journey is a 600 mile round trip three weeks from today. I'll see what happens then.

The grease on my wheels is not coming from the dust cap area. If you look at the picture in the original post the grease on mine is coming from the bottom area of the silver collar.

To OP, I would pull the bearing buddies ( just those that are leaking) clean the 2 surfaces and apply a thin layer of RTV sealer to the out side of the bearing buddy( the area that slides into the hub) and put them back in. let it sit foe 24 hours. You probably just have a poor fit between the hub & bearing buddy. We do this on boat trailers so they don't take on water when launching the boat.

This happened to ours when it was brand new, only on one wheel. We replaced the grease cup with a new one, and problem solved. Couldn't see any reason for the old one to leak, but now it's scrap metal. Sometimes you get one with a bad fitment.

On the trip home, the wheel had a few splatters at the first stop, a couple splatters at the second stop, and then was clean for the rest of the stops. So hopefully problem solved. We've got two more local trips this year and then we'll get it checked out for real over the winter. Thanks for the the advice.

The rubber caps never leak unless damaged. The galvanized covers can leak when not proper installed or damaged. You can notice this by grease on the front side of the rim.
If the seal fails you have grease on the inside of the rim but also in the drum and on the shoes. Quality double lip seals aren't expensive (keep them in your tool box) and are easy to replace. Over greasing and improper removing and installing the hub causes seal problems.

+1
Grease on the brake shoes would be my main concern. Other than that, its only a mess that needs to be cleaned up.
