Exclamation Smoke Detector Reminder

Just a reminder, it is spring and as we dewinterize, test your smoke detector(s), and replace the battery. If you do not remove the battery each winter, it might have died. I remove my battery every fall, and install a fresh battery each spring. I found our smoke detector was completely nonfunctional. Just purchased a new detector and plan to install it this week, before our first trip of the season.

Be safe, and happy camping

We test ours every time something gets baked in the oven. But, yes, good reminder.

Do the house too!

I had to replace my smoke detector a couple years ago and discovered the new ones have a non-replaceable 10 year battery at which time you replace the whole thing.

I found a Kiddie dual sensor smoke detector that still uses a 9v battery. It is a full size detector. I had hoped to find the same detector in the micro version. All the micros I had found used the 10 year battery.

I change out smoke detectors in my home every 5 years, and used to change batteries every time change. I burn wood at home, so being aware is a good thing. These at home are full size, when I went to both the hardware and a trip to Home Depot in another town, they only had the ten year ones. I wanted to change the one in the trailer, and only found the ten year ones also. Anyway, they are all changed out to ten year detectors.

It would also be a good time to look at your extinguisher's gauge to make sure it is ready if needed. ~CA

Few years back I was speaking with the fire extinguisher service guys at work. They recommended rolling the extinguishers around (not literally ), but tipping them back and forth, upside down and so forth. They stated sitting in an RV/car, and the vibrations can cause all the power to settle and compact on the bottom. They recommend doing this at least once a year. They said especially on the larger sizes, you can feel the power move around in the tank. If you cannot feel the movement, it is time to replace them. Now they did say, in the tiny RV extinguishers, there is so little powder, it hard to feel the powder (weight) shift. Guess I have another item to add to my list this week.

My cousin just bought a used 2016 Trailer. When she went to test the smoke detector nothing happened so she opened it up and the plastic "battery Saver" strip was still in side. The previous owner or the dealer she bought it from never pulled it out and obviously no one ever checked the battery the entire time she owned it.

My cousin asked her if she just replaced it and she stated no its original....

Good reminder! My rig is 11 years old and it's time to replace it. I am going to look for one with a 9v battery tomorrow, Don't like the 10 year ones in my rv.
