A V10 Engine Issue
We had the camper down to the Darlington South Carolina raceway for the NASCAR races May 7-8-9.
On the way back home, after crossing a couple of hills that had the engine revs up for an extended period of time, I started to get a flashing check-engine light on the dashboard. It would flash at a 1 second rate and for random amount of flashes (5 to 25 flashes) with varying amounts of time between flash episodes 1 minute to a half hour. All gauges, including water temp and trans fluid temp were reading nominal. Pulling into the Wytheville, Virginia KOA for the night, the engine definitely had a miss.
I have a Scangauge mounted on the dashboard, and was able to see that the Pending codes were for engine misfire. The codes were P0300, P0302, and P0307 and were so numerous that the Scangauge crashed for a while trying to count them.
On the way back from VA to PA the next day, the flashing episodes continued. Finally, the Pending codes resolved into stored code P0307 and a solid (not flashing) check-engine light. I used the Scangauge to reset the code while I was driving, but it came back.
Yesterday at the Ford shop ignition coil #7 was found defective and it was replaced. The engine was back to running smoothly when I drove it home last evening. I'm glad it wasn't anything more serious, since we're going to Texas Motor Speedway in a couple of weeks.
