at what trailer weight do you use "Tow/Haul" setting

going from Cental Tx to Key West tomorrow (yes, everything's fine at campground)

have 10' trailer w/2 kayaks & bikes & al. tool box with 50 lbs or so plus
spare tire for rig & trailer; no, i don't have a weight but am going to get one before i leave.

drive around 60-65; when do i need to use tow/haul? book dosen't give alot of help- thanks

Personally I would just leave it off with that trailer.

It's more preference than anything

I started using TOW when I 1st got my New RV a d towing my Toad, never seemed to really help uphill, my foot does better

I do, on occasion, use it for steep 8% and/or curvey down grades, but not often

Some complain the shift points or goofy or something but I never really noticed that myself

Try it, see if u prefer it or not

Not much weight on that trailer, it wouldn't concern me at all not using tow/ haul. On my 2019 Ram Cummins, I get slightly less mileage using tow/haul, but not enough to make much difference.

On mine, where the T/H really shines is long downhills with the exhaust brake. Or when I'm pulling 12000 or better, the shift points do help.

I use mine almost 100% of the time as well. Consider that these transmissions are in vehicles that could be lightly loaded, not using tow\haul mode may save fuel. However, if you check the gvwr of your E450 and the actual weight you will find it is "haul"ing a heavy load all of the time.

Using tow\haul will help save your brakes, lower the shifting up and down (shifts less often), keeps the engine closer to its power band (rpm) and allows for the torque converter to stay locked more often which allows it to run cooler.

I have measured the fuel economy both with and without t/h mode and haven't noticed any differences overall although every trip I take is slightly different in mpg anyway, but the mpg range doesn't seem to change whether I use t/h or not. ~CA

Chuckling. Towed many a load of canoes with trailer. The max weight of everything including the trailer was 500 lbs. Those little yaks and the bike and the 50 lbs and the trailer are less. Your rec kayaks weigh 40 at most and the bike 30.

We have towed with a Forester. Tow/haul is not even an option.

2 MIL's can weigh more than that outfit

And your route is flat!

The op is asking about a lightly loaded 10' trailer.

It likely won't make any difference in the driving experience if it is used or not with that light load and terrain.

The op does not mention what the tow vehicle is either.

I tow an 8' trailer with a ATV on it regularly and I never use Tow/Haul for that load. In fact in eastern AR where I tow I quite often use Eco mode because it's so flat. Can't tell a difference between Eco and Normal and I've done it both ways just to see.

Another thread, but WHO in their right mind would carry 2 MIL's? LOL

I use T/H all the time when towing. Like the automatic grade braking and shift points keep the engine in the power band better. On my Suburban, I also will use the T/H mode when in moderate/heavy traffic even when not towing. Makes the truck "peppier" and easier to navigate lane changes plus start/stops.

You won't need tow/haul, but some people just like it for whatever reason. In your case it's not necessary, but simply a personal choice.

I use tow/haul and drive manual 5th gear without cruise with my 5.3L Tahoe pulling 3,500# trailer. And I think some people would pilot my rig without T/H with cruise in full automatic.

Your choice, don't worry too much, take notes, and have a great trip!

Manufacturers recommend using tow haul anytime you are towing to help with the engine power through the transmission and breaking through the use of the engine and transmission.
They would not have it on there if it wasn't necessary.
I'm just saying

I use tow/haul. It locks out 9 and 10 on my F150. After decades of "Jeep engineers recommend" I figure Ford engineers know the physics about towing..

For me it's optional on flat ground, always go to it through rolling hills and mountains.
