Coating under stairs?

Question for anybody that has their coach batteries under the stairs. Does anybody electrically insulate it in anyway or spray coat the underside of the stair with rubber or something equivalent to protect from the battery terminals contacting it? I’d like to squeeze bigger batteries in there but know what would happen if anybody stepping in caused the stair to slightly flex and touch the two terminals similtaneously. Ideas?

Find a piece of thin rubber mat if the problem occurs. Try putting some 1/2 inch thick white foam insulation or similar on top of the new batteries, close it up and jump up and down a few times. If the foam is severely dented then you need something. If not, good as is. Alternatively, measure old vs. new batteries, add foam to the old batteries up to the new height plus 1/2 inch margin and test.

Did a similar thing for a slightly different reason.

After I added a battery it became obvious that I could easily drop a wrench on the battery and that would well ...be ugly!

I added two pieces of acrylic over the + battery terminals.
I sized them so that they flexed enough to be wedged between the walls of the battery compartment and positioned over each + terminal.
