Did you flip the cone screen over? Sometimes the check valve spring is a little stubborn, so if you flip the washer/cone screen so that it points in it holds the check valve open. Just remember to flip it back when done.
I didn't try this. I will try and see if this works.
I had this too happen from time to time.
Make sure the hose that's pulling the AF up is rock-tight to the connection. Any air that get's by the threads will prevent the AF from getting sucked up.
Raise the bottle of AF so the pump doesn't have to pull so hard, etc.

I had my screen flipped and still had an issue. Make sure the screen is secure in place to hold the check valve open, mine was not making proper contact as my connector is a little loose. After a little fiddling I got it to work.
Dealer worked me in this morning. Said the water filter cannister seal was not tight (I tightened as much as I could...but apparently not enough). Also said another seal was lose which they repaired.
They also suggested buying a hand pump specifically for priming the water pump.
