Question Refrigerator question

We have 29" Redhawk class C motor home we are taking out for the first time. I have the frig on and cooling before we leave in a couple days. Once we get on the road do I need to run the generator to keep the frig on or will it run off the battery? or propane?

Thanks!

WELCOME TO JOF!!!

The members here are GREAT!!! There is a lot of GREAT information to be found here. I am sure that you will have information and pictures to share with us... so please do!!

Most of the members use propane while traveling (just be aware of local laws, tunnels, gas stations...), some do not use propane or generator, as the fridge stays cold for their trips (not long ones). I am not sure if your battery is up to the load, as I am not sure if your RV's engine generator will be charging your house battery, while traveling. Just remember to turn on the fridge at least 24 hours in advance and only put in COLD items before leaving.

I am sure you will get a lot of personal opinions here.

I run my fridge in "Automatic mode" on SOLAR and the TV power while traveling and has never moved from electric to LP as far as I know.

When I first did my PSI the tech told me that these refridgerators are made sorta like a cooler and if I turn on my fridge one day ahead of time and put things that are already cold inside then it will stay cold up to 4 hours while on the road. So if my destination is 4 hours away or less I won't have to use propane gas to keep it cold. If it's more than a 4 hour drive then I should use the gas feature while traveling if I want things to remain cold.
So far this has proven true for me!

kayakterp,

I see in your picture that you have a Kayak (or something) hanging from the drivers side of the TT. Does the width of the trailer exceed 8' 5"?

Just curious.

When traveling I keep a couple of large frozen gel packs in my freezer compartment. I then use those while camping to keep a picnic cooler in the car cold for drinks or hauling food from a grocery run.

The two packs will keep it cold for hours in case my propane stops working.

I have towed with the propane running for years like thousands of others and never had a problem except for the pilot light going out.

We always use the propane when traveling. We start the frig on shore power 24-36 hours before departure so its nice and cold, have tried the battery once and about 3 hours later battery was dead and frig was getting warm. If you have to stop for fuel turn off frig before pulling up to the pumps then restart it before leaving the lot clear of the pumps.

Ditto with respect to it depends on how much time you'll be on the road. We've spend up to 8 hours on the road without running the frig and everything in the freezer was still frozen and everything in the frig still cold. If the seals are good and everything was as it should be before you left (frozen/cold) you should be o.k. for at least four hours.

The one warning would be don't run the frig, get everything cold and then at the last minute put stuff in the frig that isn't already cold.

Thoe fridges are designed and intended to be used on propane when traveling or stationary. Your choice.

As long as you are not breaking any laws like driving thru tunnels or violating any laws of common sense like leaving it on at a gas stop, you will be fine.

Don't do anything that leaves you feeling unsafe or careless.

Mustang65, no the trailer does not exceed 8'6"
The kayak is on the truck (TV) not the trailer. And no it does not hang over more than the width of the truck
