Seneca - Removing the 'Certified Clean Idle' Decal
Our soon-to-be-ours 37HJ has that obnoxious idle sticker below the mirror mount on the driver door. I don't like it and want to remove it without messing up the finish. Anyone been there and done that, successfully?
Thanks.

My tool of choice for removing stickers from painted surfaces has always been a hair dryer. I've rarely had to escalate to something more aggressive. Maybe give that a shot.

I've removed all sorts of decals and stickers from my vehicles (the dealer sticker on my truck tailgate for example). On a new vehicle they tend to come off super easy w/o harming the finish, just peel up the edge with a fingernail and pull slowly. Hair dryer to warm it up often helps too, as bansai pointed out.
Any residue can be cleaned up with Goo Gone or equivalent

Exactly. If that want to write me an advertising check every month, I'd leave it there. But, until that happens, it is normally the first thing I remove when I get it home. Second is the license plate frame.
A hair dryer will be your friend removing it. Goo Gone will help with any residue left behind. Make sure you put a coat of wax on it where the sticker was, since it was probably added after the fact.

Some states require that sticker to be visible on the vehicle. Look at California first:
California Clean Idle Labels
Effective in 2008, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) requires heavy-duty diesel engines to have added controls or auxiliary equipment to reduce emissions during idling. Diesel engines or auxiliary equipment which comply with this regulation are required to display a holographic certification label prominently mounted on the vehicle.

Thanks SloPoke. I had no idea a sticker could be required, but now I do! Even though I live in Ohio I will leave mine alone. I wonder if, since it is an emissions requirement (in some locations), it will be really hard to remove?

Pffft, Commiefornia...that's the last state I'd let them tell me whether or not I can peel a sticker off my vehicle
Besides, who honestly thinks a cop is going to site you for that?
If you don't live there, and don't have to get inspections there, then the rules don't really matter
(sorry for the lame rant)

Not lame at all and I totally agree. I take my 'non-California' approved toys into California every year. I was born there, but escaped at a fairly young age.
My only concern is my wife gets pulled over sometime while out there and they dig up her 4000 dollars in unpaid parking tickets from Santa Cruz. I figure only one of us is coming home from that trip. /sorry to hijack)

We also escaped, and avoid going back at all costs. Sadly we have to go back on account of attending funerals... and I have been pulled over on every trip I have taken there... We don't have any outstanding tickets or warrants, but the police think that because we have "Out of State Plates"... we will be easy picking and we won't fight a chicken-#*%& ticket in court. We thought the place sucked bad enough to move away 20 years ago... and it is worse today!
I'm leaving my Idle sticker on the rig... Just in case of another funeral.
On the other hand... My buddy who is a Fleet Service manager here... sent me this link: http://www.atri-online.org/research/...g_Cab_Card.pdf
It shows that there are more states than California that require that Sticker in 2015 -- Pennsylvania, Texas, West Virginia, North Carolina and more will in the following years...

Move the sticker to an equally prominent location somewhere less objectionable.

So it if I read the documents correctly. It appears that with the sticker attached it satisfies the exemption in certain states. and you can idle your rig for more then the time allotted. Without the sticker you are subject to a idling fine if over as little as three minutes in some states

I love learning this stuff -- never knew that there were idling restrictions (unless you have the special sticker). Since no one here has actually removed their sticker and proved it could be done without affecting the paint/clear coat, I'll leave well enough alone and get used to seeing it. Thanks everyone for your input!

I would think Freightliner or Cummins, not sure who actually provides them.

Just put some "magnet" sticker over it to hide it most of the time, remove the magnet sticker when you feel you need to.

I just plain don't want ANY sticker (including the 'JRide' one as well) spoiling the lines of my paint pattern though. Now if the idle sticker was issued as a magnet, that would be the better option. Best option IMHO would be an idle decal affixed to the windshield or driver's fixed forward window.

The real question is did they apply the sticker after the paint or did they mask it and paint around it. They are tamper proof so if it comes off and they painted around it.......
