Towing speed

So, Ive been heading to Arizona from Philly the last few days....trying to limit my speed to 65 MPH. People have told me 65 is the limit....is that realistic or is 70 more realistic?
Any reasons why or why not?

Just for the record I've been getting an average of 6.45 MPG.

What tires are on your rig? That is the limiting factor as many RV tires are speed rated at 65. If you have GOODYEAR ENDURANCE tires then 70 would be acceptable since they have a higher rating. Remember that your fuel economy may drop if you do run at 70.

Seeing this is posted in the motorhome forum, I would assume you're tires are not the limiting factor for your rig.

If you had a towable RV, the tires would likely be the limiting factor.

I tow an 18’ single axle TT, so I limit myself to 65 max. usually 60 is good, but my tires are rated at 65 max. Not sure what your are towing, but 6.45 mpg, must be a very large trailer. If your tires are rated at 70 mph, 70 should be fine.

And in a few hours 70 will seem too slow.

I tow a 30’ TT, weighing loaded at 6900 pounds. My GYE tires are rated for 87 MPH; speed limit here in Arizona is 75 mph for all vehicles. Towing with my 2007 Tundra at 75 mph I average 8 mpg. Towing at 60-62mph I average 10.3 mpg. I am retired and not in a hurry, living on a limited income, so one guess on how fast I drive.....

Like posted if it's a trailer, regardless a tt or 5er, the china bombs are good for 65 max and some are at 60. The Goodyear Endurance tires are 87. I normally pull my 45' Northpoint at 70-73 and get between between 9 and 10mpg depending on headwinds.
Now, if you're looking at it from a legality side, your rig is NOT commercial, so you dont have to adhere to the posted truck speeds or pull into weigh stations.
However, I THINK I remember seeing in some states I've travelled thru in the past that if you're towing a trailer weighing more than X amount then you have to run a slower posted speed. Dont quote me on that and hopefully some others will chime in.
I know you aren't traveling thru Michigan to get to Arizona but here we can run whatever the posted speed is for non commercial vehicles. Most interstates here are 70 but we have some that are 75.

FWIW, here are the speed limits for RVs, along with any special provisions, for all 50 states.

I tow between 60-70. I have found that steady slower speeds make for a more relaxed and rested feeling after a long day's drive. Used Provider tires for 14K and then purchased Good Year Endurance. We get between 7 - 8 MPG.

I don't care how far I am towing I drive at 60mph on interstates, right lane only of course, and less than that on 2 lane depending on the condition of the road.

I'm retired. I will get there when I get there and enjoy the ride.

I've been driving about 5 MPH under the speed limit...65 MPH...just to make the drive easier. At 70 MPH as you know you have to fight with the traffic all day long. It's easier to let the cars and trucks pass you.

My tires are Michelin on a Jayco 31DS pulling a 2019 Ford Edge.

You're right...the wife wants to see the grand kids by Christmas.

I think I should say, we'll get there when we get there.

I thought you had a trailer. 70 with the MH would not be a problem, but we always set the cruise at 65 and motored along.

That's also a function of hours or miles per day. A lot of travelers follow the rule of 4 or 5. As in 400 miles or 4 pm or 500 miles or 5 pm.

I tend to get a second wind and enjoy driving after dinner for a couple three hours so that was rarely my thing. My long trip days cover 600 miles or so. We've stretched it towing to 800 miles but I don't want to try that again.

X2, that’s my philosophy also.

I'm not sure Outdoorsy knows what they are talking about. Michigan does not require RV's to do the "truck" limits unless you are over 26,000lbs.

65 or 5 under seems to be the sweet spot. Just stay on the right and I'll speed up to pass a slow semi once in a while. Other than that most everyone goes around me and the drive is a lot more relaxing.

I do have to add time to the GPS since it thinks I'll be driving the speed limit the whole time.

The RV by itself @ 70 or 75 is fine, but with a toad that isn't very comfortable.

I have noticed on mine that the transmission doesn't want to stay in OverDrive when I am towing and exceed right at 72mph. I rarely ever ever go that fast anyway though, although I have once or twice on a few long flat roads. 65~70 works fine for me, favoring the 65 mph as it seems to me that it takes a lot more gas pedal and fuel to try to go 70 vs going 65. ~CA

One of the things we have noticed is that staying 65 to 68 makes good time and sits at the top of the torque curve. And, staying below the speed limit allows the idiots to cramp into your safe distance, slam on their brakes, you don't have to react like you would at the speed limit. Since I've been pulling and dropped the speed it is more relaxed and I don't want to turn some idiot into a flat car

68 is my sweet spot. As a general rule 65 is the speed limit in most states except Calif. I think 55 there.
