Always did, whether 30 or 50. Just check the battery/s regularly.

So is it possible that a battery maintainer that I use could have messed up the battery?

Was the maintainer hooked up and charging at the same time the TT was plugged in? What happened to the battery that you describe as being messed up? Did the cells boil dry, and how old is it? There are some questions that might help to figure it out.

I installed a 50A plug on the side of the house/garage where out trailer sits. Only time I plug it in is if I have to use it while its parked there, which is rare. Otherwise it's not plugged in while sitting there. I do plug it in when i pull it out of its spot onto the side apron of the driveway so we can get things ready and packed for a trip. And when we come home and park it there for unloading, washing, etc. When its parked along side the house/garage I have the battery disconnect in the off position and have never had an issue with a dead battery when I need it. When the disconnect is off the only thing that still works is the front landing gear/auto level system. Everything else is dead.

I did. It know that the landing gear still has power to it even when the battery is cut off. Interesting

It may be a safety thing.
Or maybe mine is an unusual one. Lol!

If I’m not using the RV I just have the 20amp plugged in. When traveling I just use the 30 amp.

Never use the 50amp, but I only have one A/C(it’s wired for 2 A/C’s. Might take it on winter trip so I could plug in 2 electric heaters.

We have the residential refrigerator, so it stays plugged in 24/7

When we built a house in 1997 we poured a concrete parking pad and 50 amp service. We have since built another home with an rv garage also with 50 amp. Every rv we have owned since 1997 has been plugged to the electric 24/7 while parked at home. I do check my battery water levels every few months but most of the time no or little water is needed. We had a diesel pusher for 7 years that I sold with the 6 original batteries still working well. Our last 5th wheel had 2 6 volts which I changed at 6 years but were still working. Our motorhome, previous fifth wheel and now our Pinnacle all had/have residential fridges but I don't turn them on until a few days before a trip. I do use a surge protector.

81greer - All my past and present 5wh's stayed plugged in 24/7 and all had residential fridges in them. As already stated, I check batteries every two months or so. Rarely do they require water but always check them. 50AMP surge protector with 50AMP extension cord going to the 5th wheel. I run the extension through PVC pipe so I don't hit it when snow blowing. It may come as a surprise to some but, I never turn the disconnect of off either. SKIDAWG

Thanks so much for the info. I’m going to check about having a 50 amp service to the carport where I park my 5th wheel.

All of the ones I've owned have the jack wired directly to the battery with it's own fuse. I'm sure it's so that you can unhook without opening the unit to turn on the switch.
