Generator install for a eagle

I have a 2018, Eagle, 5th wheel, and it has the generator prep. I have acquired a near new onan5500, but it’s a EVAP has model which I intend to convert to LP gas, anyone have any suggestions or pictures of a Eagle with the generator installed? Would appreciate any help l can get. Thanks.

I installed a LP 5500 in my 2017 Eagle 293RKDS. Should just be able to order the LP parts needed to convert it.

I can take pics of my install this evening. I lined my fire box with high quality marine sound deadening material. Expensive but well worth it when you're sleeping directly above the running genset. Can't hear it with the AC fan on. Put 200 hours on mine so far. Installed it Aug 17.

Would appreciate pictures. Thanks. Do you remove the plywood floor and mount directly to the underlying frame? Have heard that or get a template for cutting out holes for air flow. There are only 2 screws holding the plywood in place in the generator compartment.

You remove the plywood. Genset sets on the framing and the holes are there. Plywood is a major fire hazard, do not try to use it. Everything on the Onan is from the bottom. The air intake for the carb, the air intakes for the engine and generator cooling, oil filter, oil drain, and the hot air from the cooling. You do not want any of that blocked.

Should have pics tonight yet. At the state park pool. Once back to the campsite I will take some pics.

So your unit was prepped for a generator? My trailer looks almost identical, except the battery lugs in your gen compartment, all of mine are in the battery side of the he compartment. So did you flare out the exhaust at the end? Does it make it quieter? Sorry for all the questions.

Yes, gen prep option. The battery lugs you mention in the gen compartment is probably the fuse for my inverter. I had it mounted there till I installed the generator. The tailpipe has an adaptor on it for a Gen-trui exhaust stack.
I ran my exhaust so it wasn't under a slide out. Mine has two on that side. The bedroom slide and main slide. So I ran it so it came out between them. Also it's not under any windows.

Do you have any issues with clearance from the exhaust? I also have 2 slides on the drivers slide, but my bathroom is in the front of the unit, with no windows, so I can probably take it out towards the front instead of between the slides, I also intend to use the ven- Turi. I appreciate the time and information I just need to get a kit to convert it to LP, the get it in the trailer. I tend to over research things like conversion kits for this. Thanks again, I feel much more confident about moving forward.

Getting the genset in the compartment is the hardest part of the install. I had access to pallets and a forklift. So we set it on a couple pallets then forklift it into position. Then lowered the landing gear till it matched the genset height. We then slid it in.
I don't recommend using the large wire nuts Jayco provided on the output leads in the junction box. Get split bolts and use rubber electrical tape then vinyl electrical tape over that. I've seen wire nuts fail on wiring that size and current.

What size of split bolt would you Recommend?

I don't recall what I used. I went by the number of wires and their gauge size. I got that size and the next size down and up to be safe. Got them at Lowe's as well as the rubber electrical tape.

I don’t suppose you have a wiring guide for what wires go to what , I didn’t get a installation manual, and want to make sure I do it right. Thanks for all the advise you’ve provided.

Your Onan will have two hots, one from each breaker. A neutral and ground. One hot to Jayco black, other hot to Jayco red. Neutral to white. Ground to ground. The remote panel has a connector that plugs into the genset. You can download Onan install manuals from online for your model.

Earl,

Good pics and info. You mentioned the sound level, how about any vibration? Thanks!

Don't feel it in bed or when in the recliner. Can feel it slightly on the flooring.

Thanks. Good info. Since I’m usually in the recliner or in bed it should be no problem!

Hate to keep bothering, but where did you get the exhaust pipe to get it to the side of your unit? I have tried muffler shops, amazon and can’t seem to find anything in the size I need. I bought a kit from amazon, the size in diameter is good but it’s not long enough to get it out the side, comes about 16” short, and can’t seem to find that size anywhere, very frustrated, also the drop to bend is about 7” lower than I like but will live with it. Hope you can help me with a source for the pipe, your help has been great, and I really appreciate it. Thanks Troy

I used the Onan 155-3481-02 tailpipe kit. I then used exhaust adaptors to change the size to a easier to find size. I order a stick of exhaust pipe from napa and ran my exhaust to safe exit location away from slideouts and not directly under a window. I can try looking for sales receipts for the part numbers.

I used the above Onan kit and just made it longer with Napa exhaust adaptors and pipe. Easy to do, but trying to get the correct size adaptors wasn't. Lol The Onan tailpipe is an odd 1 3/8" OD. I believe I adapted it 1.5".

I will look for the receipts tonight.
