I mostly use Auto but when traveling through the mountains I would switch to Max.

I use Max exhaust brake while towing - With all the crazy drivers that want to pull in front of a FW being towed - I like the feeling of the strong exhaust brake just by letting my foot off the accelerator.

With my Ford its either On, Off or Auto. I have only gotten to use it in the Smokey Mountains so far. Worked as advertised.

Why not use it all the time? I use mine all the time, saves brake wear. Wish I could add an exhaust brake to my car.

Earl

Its weird you say that. I sometimes get off the highway ramp with it in the OFF position and it appears to be slowing me down with the engine brake. Maybe smarter than I am.

Could be braking through the transmission. Exhaust brake shouldn't work unless activated.

Same here on my 07 Ram with a pacbrake. But I use mine all the time. Even empty. Saves the brakes! Also use it to warm the engine up and on high idle.

I use it in auto mode. Last year was going down Monteagle Ten. interstate 24 on our way to Florida it worked great with the tow haul and Aisin trans. Only had to touch brake once and it stayed around 55 mph. Very happy with the Ram.

I sold my 07 Ram and bought a new 18 Ram. So I went from on/off on the 07 to on/auto on the exhaust brake. So far I mainly use auto exhaust brake. I haven't towed yet, so that maybe different. I do throw it to on when I'm on a hilly curvy road. My 07 was manual transmission. So I'm not use to the truck downshifting and braking. So when I want to just slow down a little, it starts progressively downshifting and braking. Gotta get use to that and be mindful how long I stay off the throttle to prevent it when I don't need it. So I may get on the throttle a bit and then back off to do some exhaust braking without a lot of downshifting. I also drive in tow/haul mode all the time to keep the engine from lugging during break in and the exhaust braking performs better.

Took your recommendation Earl and the last 2 camping trips I just left the exhaust brake in auto. Works well that way and you dont have to think about it at all.

The Banks Exhaust brake in my 04.5 Ram 3500 is always on!!! I wouldn't know what to do with myself if it wasn't there. Never have had an issue maintaining speed on a downhill nor worrying about other people in traffic. Not the same as a Jacob's Brake but as close as I can get in my Dodge!!
