The struts on my 2017 hood lift/ assist failed. I have not got around to replacing them.
Nice write up and thanks for posting.

Thanks for the update Weezer. I was thinking that at least one of the struts was mounted upside down, which would indeed be cause for premature failure. Just couldn't quite get my head around how they were mounted for up/down operation; but I was guessing opposite orientations to allow for UP and DOWN.

Glad to hear everything is working, and I really think that somebody else is going to find this thread really useful because like I said, if you had the issue, somebody else probably will too.

Actually both struts are acting in the same direction - up. The reason there are two is to double the stroke. There's not sufficient height in the mechanism to allow for a strut with a 35" stroke so they use doubles at 17.5" stroke to do the same thing but in a much more (vertically) compact package. Pretty clever! Both raise the TV while going back down relies strictly on the operator's muscle power. I had assumed that one of them provided some down assist but nope... up is limited by the stroke of the struts while down is located by a physical, mechanical lock (operated by the "toggle" when raising). Hope this clarifies its operation somewhat. I did email the televator's manufacturer to point out that the struts should be mounted piston (or rod) down.
