Depends too on where you are camping. I know places in Michigan's Upper Peninsula that don't get cell service, at all. When you can find it you might only get 1G, so you can forget using the Internet. Even 3G is painfully slow and many outlying areas, even though they have service, only offer 3G. The big services like to advertise getting 4G everywhere but that is not reality.

Many areas in the West, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Nevada etc you will have poor to no cell service. If you do have service, as others have said, it may be very slow even in off peak seasons. In summer even good service areas can be painfully slow to almost non existence. Many areas the service is sized for the local population, when you get tourists it can grow to many times that number of people, all trying to use the same undersized cell service capability. You may be able to check EMail, but I would not count on being able to stream video. Also video streaming can use massive amount of data and if your plan is not sized accordingly you could be in for an ugly bill for exceeding your data plan.

FMCA & Verizon have partnered and have an available Wifi hotspot using the Verizon Jetpack. You get the Jetpack for 1 cent (normally $100) and unlimited 4g broadband for $49.99 per month. However it does require a two year contract. Good if you're full time. You can use it for all of your devices.

As others have said, it depends on the phone, and primarily if it is an Apple or an Android.

What do you have for a phone?

I have an Android (Samsung), and it is really easy, I just did it for the 1st time over Christmas while traveling so the kid could do his homework.

Even if your equipment gives the capability of accessing the internet by using your phone as a 'hot spot' or a dedicated 'hot spot' device, the connection to a cell tower and the cell tower capability could be an issue.

We were camp hosts in a rural area and had to walk about 200yds from our site to the top of a hill just to get marginal cell service to send and receive text messages; no internet access.
