Hi friends, Finally going to snow bird in florida .5th wheeling from P.A. taking 81 crossing over to 95. was looking at 64 to 288 around Richmond to 95. What Does anybody think about that road? And next question is where can you stay since its still cold and we would leave end of february. It would be nice for a motel with a large parking lot or somthing like that.... Thanks!

With @JohnWedell on 77 to 26 to 95 if taking I81 to start. Low traffic, only one major city with traffic (Charlotte). Nice comfortable drive. Assuming you are going to the right coast in FL and not the left (you did aim for I-95).

Haven't been through for a while, anyone know if the construction has finished through downtown Jax yet? It was going for years. If still ongoing, take the Jax Beaches bypass around (or have a change of underwear handy).

Eastern p.a. around Milford. I thought 78 to 81 to 64 because it looks easy to get to 95. 77 has a big mountain pass. 95 is pretty much the way the to go. Then 10 to the west coast. 64 looks good on the map.. Thanks much .

I agree with the others, 81 to 77 then 26 and 95. I would camp at Sweetwater Lake Campground on I-26. $30 for the night.

By the time you hit 77, you're pretty much done with the mountains.

We use 81 to 77 since 1996. If you need to get back to 95 in FL take 77 to 26

81 has ups and downs but in general in VA it follows the Shenandoah Valley. Not mountains. If you want Mountains wait to get off in TN on 26. That takes you to Asheville and is high up. 77 takes you over the Blue Ridge and there is some elevation gain then a long descent after Hillville ( where it usually is snowing but not bad) into NC.
In the winter we don not mess with Asheville BBQ notwithstanding.

There is a nice KOA at 81 and 77. Wytheville KOA. Close to highway but no road noise. Easy access to fuel, gas or diesel, at same exit.

81-66-17 never had a single problem and 17 is a nice little break from the Interstate

Why would you want to go to Florida? Giant Burmese Pythons under every bush, Roaches as big as cats, Mosquitos as thick as hoards of locusts, Man-Eating alligators, Melanoma sunburns, Flesh-Eating bacteria, Red Tide, and smelly water.

The only Burmese Python in the wild I have seen is in the porta potty at Pavilion Key in the Everglades. I guess seeking shade! I quietly closed the door and used the next one.

I guess I'm the only idiot who takes 95 the whole way. We leave from NE Maryland, bypass the tunnels in Baltimore, take the 295 bypass around Richmond, and let GPS guide us through Jacksonville depending on traffic conditions.

We'll do 81 by car, but I'm not keen towing on it, due to the winter weather gambles and fuel economy hit you take on that route due to its elevation.

We stay in Roanoke Rapids or Four Oaks NC first night, and Charleston or Savannah area second night on way down. We hit Orlando and New Smyrna Beach when we are down there. Leaving in 2 weeks.

Lowmiler, No, you are not the only one. We take I-95 to Rt 1 in Delaware to rt 301/rt50. Then hop back on 495 a short distance to 95. Also use 295 bypass around Richmond. Possible difference, since I lived/worked in the DC area for a couple of years, is I know to be across the Potomac river no later than 6 am. We leave @ 3:00 am but other than the early start we enjoy the trip. Very little traffic. We stop and have a nice breakfast around Richmond area.
