6V Battery Upgrade

Hi,
Ten days ago we upgraded our battery in our 17MBS from one 12V battery to two 6V batteries wired in series. I thought the batteries were fully charged, but I had them plugged in to shore power for 24 hours just to be sure.

About 20 hours into our trip the low battery light beeped. (We did not have shore power at our campsite.) We made it home, and I figured I should have charged the batteries for 48 hours, not 24. So after charging, I wondered what the correct voltage should be for two 6V batteries wired in series. I pulled off the battery cover to measure the voltage and found that they installed two 12V batteries, not two 6V batteries!

So I'm off to the dealer to get this fixed, but my question is am I going to fry any components since I'm running 24V and not 12V? Thanks.

David

Best guess is that they installed them wired in parallel. I would assume that your charger and electronic components would have puked with 24 volts applied. Also, if you start at 24 volts, it is a long way down to a low battery indication.

I'm like minded.

The installer hopefully wired them in Parallel. If so, you just have more capacity but something stinks if you did not get what you paid for. Even worse if they wired them in series.

Does your receipt show 2 6volt batteries?

Either the person who rang up your order made a mistake or the installer did. I would go back and politely tell them you got two 12 volts instead of the two 6 volts that you wanted. Get them to fix the problem to your satisfaction.

Thanks Jim. Looking at the batteries again, I'm sure they are wired in parallel. Tomorrow I'll get them swapped out for 6V. I'm still not sure how they screwed this up.

Hi Don,
Thanks for your reply. I don't participate in Facebook, etc. (although my wife does... she has 8 sisters) so I'm not sure how to post a picture to a URL. But the negative terminal on battery #1 is connected to the negative terminal on battery #2, and the same goes for the positive terminals. The receipt clearly states 6V upgrade, so I'm not sure how they got it wrong.

Hi,
My paperwork clearly states 6V upgrade. They even indicated the discount on the upgrade. I figured out the batteries were wrong by looking up the model # on the Interstate website. They put in HD-24's (12V) but the paperwork said they were suppose to put in EC2's (6V). Oh well...
