Battery Issue

Well, I never thought I'd do it, but I did. The other day I hooked up the battery backwards. It blew the fuse and I replaced it. Went camping and hooked up to shore power. Everything worked. Came home. Next morning, battery almost dead. Charged it. Replaced in camper and dead in 12 hours. Did I trash the battery or did I screw something up in camper?

There are 2 reverse polarity fuses in the converter if I remember correctly. Check those.

Questions, questions, questions...
How old is the battery?
Did you store the battery fully charged while it was out of the camper?
Was the battery fully charged when you installed it backwards?
After you charged the battery, was battery power OK in the camper?
What was the battery voltage when you installed it?
How did you determine the battery was dead in 12hrs? What was the battery voltage?
Are you sure no lights, fans, etc. were left on?

Battery is a year old. It was fully charged when I accidently hooked it up. Power was O.K. in camper. Everything worked fine. Slide closed, awning retracted, etc. Got to campground and used shore power the whole time. Drove home. Next morning could barely retract awning and slide out. Checked battery with voltmeter. Had 10.7 on voltmeter. Took it back out and charged it. It charged to 12.7. Next morning, battery only had around 10.7. No lights or fan or refrigerator running. If the battery is charged again and left out without hooking it up to travel trailer, will it deplete itself if battery is bad?

Thank you for replying. If the converter fuses were blown, would everything work on travel trailer if just hooked up to battery power? When I hook up fully charged battery, slide works, awning works, lights, etc. It's just after about 12 hours or so just leaving the battery hooked up to my travel trailer that the battery is almost dead.

Yes. The reverse polarity fuse(s) just protect the charging circuit separately from the actual 12V feed into the unit. In all the trailers I've had, they're just regular automotive fuses found in the converter/main fuse box.

Be careful as you have several parasitic drains on the battery that can not be shutdown without disconnecting the battery.
Your thought on removing, charging and measuring is the way to go.
One thought on the charge, if you are truly reading less than 12 V, your battery is most likely dead.

Thank you for the reply, NHstuckingGA. The problem started when I accidently crossed the battery cables. Even though the fuse by the battery instantly blew, I'm wondering if I trashed the battery. Like I said, the battery takes a full charge when I put it on my battery charger, but drains down overnight. I checked for lights possibly being on, made sure the antenna booster was off and looked at everything else. Still, battery drains down overnight. Looks like a new battery next Spring.

The parasitic draws I referred to are the fire/smoke detector, LP & CO2 detectors.
If the battery drains down overnight when not in the trailer, you have a short in one of the cells. Common occurrence.
New battery.
But keep camping! Any good luck.

There is nothing I can think of that would cause the battery to be trashed as a result of reversing the polarity and blowing the reverse polarity fuse. I'm guessing as someone else suggested that there is another fuse that needs to be replaced at the converter that is preventing the battery from being charged.

Charge the battery and then take it to some place like Autozone, Advanced Auto Parts, O'Reilly Auto Parts or a Battery store and have then do a load test. If it passes you have some type of load. Easiest way to find it is with the battery out, put an ohm meter across the battery leads and pull fuses till the load goes away.

There are other low power things that are always on like the CO2 detector, Smoke Detector, USB Charge ports. One of these may be shorted out.
