Black water issue
Hi friends. I was dry camping (as we call it here in Canada) and used camper for 4-5 days. When I went to sani station to dump, I turned the outside drain cap and the black water was right there and came shushing out. I quickly put cap back on and got a Rubbermaid container to capture the yucky stuff. What a nightmare to clean up. I then attached drain hose and all was good. Why did this happen? New to trailering.

Either the BT valve was not completely closed from the last time, or it may have vibrated slightly open from being towed. It's not uncommon to have a bit of "seepage" but I have only experienced a cup or 2 of yucky stuff when removing the BT cap, never a gusher.

Sounds like the black tank dump valve was already open or partly open. Keep that valve closed until AFTER the hose is connected and in position to dump. And, if you need to verify all is well when the hose is connected, open the GRAY water for a moment. If there is a problem with a hose etc., it will be a gray water issue not black.
Also, since you are new to all this, drain the GRAY tank after the black tank to clean yucky stuff out the hose before you store it.

The valve was closed all the way. It was about 5-6 cups. Is it possible the tank was over full?

If the tank was overfull you'd know it in other ways!
Is it possible that someone pulled the valve and closed it again while you were gone, thereby filling the space between the valve and the cap at the end? That could account for black 'stuff' even though the valve was closed when you started dumping.

If toilet paper doesn't proper dissolve it might get stuck on the valve. Open and close the valve a couple of times. Which should solve the problem.

Thanks for the advice. I did know to dump black first then grey to flush it out. I also have a hydro flush so using hose through the flush definitely cleaned up some toilet paper that hadn’t come out with the black.

I use tall rubber gloves and the first thing i do is connect the sewer hose (far end first) than hold the business end up to and under the cap then ever so slowly remove the cap just in case there might be a problem. Just like Seann45 said" never trust those hellions ".

Macerators have their own valve as well, further up the line. If you run one of those that can add a lot more in the line.

I have seen that happen if the trailer isn't level or leaning towards the dump station piping. I solved the issue, except of course for the little hellion scenario, by putting a shutoff valve just before the end cap.
