Hot Water Out of Cold Faucet

Hi everyone, we have a problem and was hoping someone could help. Hot water is coming out of our cold water faucet. The water runs very hot for about 20 seconds and then turns cold. it is even running hot in the toilet when we flush. Does anyone know what the problem might be? The water is hot enough to hurt, if you left your hand under it. Thanks for all replays!

I would check the bypass valve at the water heater. Make sure it is closed and the other two valves are open.

If that's not it, verify that the outside shower valves are both closed.

Does it do it when you are hooked to city water and when you pump from your fresh water tank? Probably way to simple and you may already be aware, but if it is doing only when connected to water hook-up, was wondering if the hose was in the sun and getting hot. I have had it happen before.

Yes, it happens with city water hookups and with water from the tanks. The water seems to be coming from the water heater. We will check the bypass valve first thing in the morning. Thanks, we hope that is all it is.

How do you know the toilet water is hot? Lol. Sorry, had to ask. With this great forum your problem will get resolved. Again check the hot water heater valves.

I was wondering the same thing. It has to be something with the winterizing valves.
