How many shut off main water when leaving

I usually shut off the main water supply when going out for the day when the trailer is parked at a campsite. I don't know if its overkill or what but I always have this feeling that a flood will break loose when I'm away. Murphy's law I guess. Anyone else feel this way or am I nuts?

I'm nuts, too. I shut off the water, or water pump, when leaving for a while.

I used to but have since stopped shutting off the water every day. If I'm going to be gone for a week I shut it off. I'm living in it through the week for work and it's too much trouble to shut it off every day, especially now that it's heat traced and insulated, and the shut off is under the ground and I have to get down on my knees in wet grass to do it.

On a new trailer I'll for sure do it until I've built up a comfort level that the plumbing isn't going to let go. My new jayco that I've since traded developed 3 leaks in a few months.

I leave it on unless I'm leaving the site for a couple of days as when I'm camp hosting.

I do. Not hard, takes about 10 seconds and does no harm. I turn off the water heater too.

A trailer is not like a house that never moves. Every time you move your trailer it's like a 8.0 earthquake so plumbing can shake loose.

I once saw a motorhome in a campground with water running out the door while the owners were away. Somebody had already turned off the outside water but it was still flowing out the closed door. I always wondered how deep it got inside.

if I'm going to be gone more than an hour I turn it off. Just one toilet leak at 45 PSI will flood and destroy the place. Just 5 seconds of my time has the potential of costing me $100s of dollars in repairs and untold hours of work. Let's just say I've learned from other people's misfortune.

This is a link to a thread I posted. It happened last week on our Disney trip. I will seriously reconsider how I do my water from now on.

Not only do I shut off the water to the camper when we leave but I also turn off the water at the house when we leave on a trip.

That is a bizarre occurrence and a great example of Murphys Law. I can't believe the water inlet is where it is on that model. Mine is on the rear not on proximity to anything.

Good Luck - Hope all goes well with the claim.

I just became a believer in shutting down my water when leaving for the day. It wouldn't have helped you in your case but it's not worth the risk.

Anytime we leave the campsite or go to bed the pump or water hookup valve gets turned off. I have read too many horror stories of a failed toilet valve or leaking pipe.

Always off if we leave. My shop and the house get turned off as well. If nothing's ever happened to you, you're fortunate.

First time that toilet valve fails and water is on, it's quite the surprise. Never happened to us, just learned early in our rving from others losses.

Usually I don't but sometimes I do just for no particular reason.

Never had a problem but they do happen I hear.

Yes. I turn it off when leaving the site for any extended time (more than an hour or two).

I'm going to assume that you are a young couple with no kids. I only say that because at my age I can't make it through the night without at least 1 bathroom trip...

Looking at the picture it looks like the hose got in front of the exhaust port and burned a hole.

I believe it was covered in another thread, but cheap and simple battery operated water alarms can be a life saver in the potential leak areas, for those wondering "what about at night when we're asleep". Under the 2 sinks and under rear bunk are the only areas in ours. That said, hadn't put any in, but it's on the list like 100 other things.

After seeing a $.5M motor home with water pouring down the steps, out of the storage doors and from under it, we decided to turn off the water when we leave. As someone else posted, they hate bending over and getting their clothes wet (dew), so here is my latest mod. I hated leaving the pressure regulator out in the open by the CG's water spicket, so I moved the regulator and put an on/off PVC valve above the TT's bumper. Since then I have decided to add a electric ball valve to replace the manual PVC one. Will have a switch in the kitchen and bathroom. May even wire it into the TT's microcontroller and when the truck leaves it automatically turns off the water, because if DW depends on me to turn off the water... that is not going to happen ..memory:-(

I love electronic projects. Will keep you posted with the project.

I had never thought about that but it makes sense to turn it off when no one's there. The camper you save could be your own.

Just use the water in your fresh water tank. Flip the switch on to use and flip it off when finished. You can turn on the shore water in the morning.

It did. It was straight down when I hooked up, guessing a kid snagged it. It was crossing the vent at a 45 when I found it.

I've always cut if off if we leave but Murphy came at night !!!
