Locked door opens when traveling

Hi all,

New to Jayco and we have had an odd problem. Occasionally, while we are moving, the locked door to our Jayflight 24FBS comes unlatched. The only thing that keeps it from flying open as we ride down the road is that large grab rail that came on it that crosses over the door.

Has anyone else had this happen? It doesn't happen all the time and we ALWAYS check the door to make sure it is securely latched after locking both the handle lock and the deadbolt before we drive away. But sometimes we arrive and go to unlock the door & as soon as we move the big grab handle out of the way, the door just opens (and it is still locked.)

I am very grateful for that grab handle, but I don't think this is normal.

Thanks in advance for any assistance

Sounds like the strike ( lock bolt) is only just entering the strike plate ( just the tip ) and the small vibrations and door moving within the frame cause it to pop out.

Use some WD40 on the bolt to ensure it is extending all the way ( dirt ) and or you may have to put a spacer ( washer ) behind the strike plate to make it sit closer to the bolt.

Or add it to your warranty list

Take it back to the dealer and have them check for broken missing screws between the wall and the floor of the RV. the whole wall may be moving some when driving.. of course that is after they checked the striker plate mentioned above.

The 24FBS is a great TT for 2+. We have not had any issue with our door opening so I agree with Seann45's comments...back to the dealer. Welcome to the Forum and congrats on your new trailer.
Happy RVing,
Jeff

Had the same thing happen on our 28DSBH last year while traveling to the east coast last summer. Went around a left corner in a parking lot and the bathroom door swung open. I figured the trailer flexed enough while driving to release the deadbolt catch and allow the door to open when traveling at a low speed. I managed to realign the strike plate but the door opened up once more on our way back. I had to bring the trailer in for a new sink last fall so I just added this to the list of fixes. We'll see this summer when we head to the west coast if it was a successful fix.

I lock deadbolt and put grab handle over it, as this has also happened to me.

Thanks for replies!

Wow, great group here! Thank you.

I shall add this to my warranty list as suggested. We have a few more odd little things that have come up (the door to one of the storage/dinette seats has come completely off, little things here and there.) We've had a trailer before so we know these things happen, after all, the house is moving so one should expect things to come loose, but I didn't expect the door to open.

Again, thank you for your suggestions. We'll check the deadbolt and screws and all the things you have suggested and when we find a Jayco dealer in our travels we'll tell them about it (we travel 7+ months/year.)

Thanks again!!

Same here. Happened twice on a long trip recently. Then I started using the deadbolt and that solved the problem. It hasn't happened again in 1500+ miles.

I make the DW run along side and hold it closed. So far, this works!

..Or

Use the deadbolt!

This happened to us several times with our 22FB, not while driving, but while gone from camp for the day, or when in storage, although we always locked both locks. Had the door rehung under warranty, and I don't think it has happened since, but we now always fold the grab bar over when leaving for the day or longer.

I forgot to lock the deadbolt on our way to Florida last month and my door popped open and I didn't notice it until I was pulling into a truck stop at 3am..... No clue how long it was open for.

some of you said you fold the grab bar over in front of the door, has anyone ever wondered what would happen if someone came along at night and did that while you are asleep?
