New tow vehicle
Hi All,
I just purchased a 2020 GMC 2500 HD to pull my Whitehawk 31BH. I am told I may not need to use the sway bar and WD bars with this truck, anyone have any experience on this set up?

I'm not sure why they said that, but I would never tow without a WDH, and some sort of sway control, unless I was towing a VERY short distance. We have an Equalizer brand, that does both in one unit. You don't want to find out the hard way that they were wrong.

I agree, the sway bars etc have little to do with the tow vehicle.
Who told you, a salesman, if he was trying to sell you the truck and his mouth moved, most likely it’s bull.

Figured, and it is actually in the trucks owners manual. No question the truck will handle more than the trailer can dish out, but thought I would toss it out there.

I guess the guy is right....if the trailer starts wagging like a dogs tail because it loaded poorly, the trailer will probably flip and the truck will still be on it’s wheels. If you were towing it with a Ford Focus, they both would flip.

On a windy day you’ll be happy you have a weight distribution hitch with sway control.

The only time I ever towed our old trailer without a WDH and sway bar was for about 5 miles thru town. It worked out ok but never felt good about it. I don't care if the truck can tow without those I would not do it. I never got above 30 mph.

One thing not mentioned is what are you towing? I never see anyone towing a boat with a WDH. Very rarely do I see a large cargo trailer with a WDH. Honestly, if I had a PU or a small tt. I might not use a WDH, or sway control. But with anything of size and weight, absolutely would I have both.

Under what conditions does the owners manual say sway control and a WDH are not necessary. I’d be surprised to see any manufacturer make a blanket statement like that for liability reason...
I used a Blue Ox setup that does both with my 2500 and 28BHBE. Worked great.

I towed mine 200 miles without my WDH since amazon kept losing the spring bars in shipment.
It was not ok at all, you can really feel the difference in control you get with a WDH.

If you are using a WDH head, if you read the owners manual (at least mine says this) it will state that the rated capacity is when used WITH the sway bars. If the hitch head is rated to 10,000 pounds then that is with the sway bars used.

I agree with most on here. I'm a professional driver and I'll tell you right now gm is wrong. At minimum you need to use the WD bars. That has nothing to do with the truck really and more to do with the trailer. If you pulling a bumper pull trailer that has more then 250 to 350 lbs and is taller then 6 to 7 feet it's not on option it's a necessity. Now I've towed some pretty big bumper pulls with a 2500hd and not used sway control many times and been just fine. But that said I would probably use it to simply be on the safe side. If you already have it it only takes a minute to put it on. extra safety is worth a minute or two. I've seen many 1 tons pulling little 20 foot and smaller rvs for delivery and they always have at least WD bars on.. many will run without away control but again safety first..

I would use them , makes trailer more stable . I had Reese WD bars on my 2007 Jayco Eagle TT . I was heading home A couple of seasons ago and got cut off on interstate . I had to jerk wheel back to avoid crash . Its the only thing that saved 34’ TT from tipping over . Saved TT and PU truck and others on interstate. I would invest in set up !

Sway control
You might get by without the load level attachments, but the sway control makes a difference.
