Propane is extremely cold which makes the tank cool or cold. To find out the level of propane in a tank. Heat water then slowly pour it over the top of the tank. Run your bare hand down the side of the tank until the tank is feels cool. That's your propane level in the tank.

As others have noted, you develop a sense of the level in the tank.

Can you describe the boiling water method? or send a link?

I just found it on page 2 by Golf Guy and it shows right above mine. Boy do I feel silly.

I am in the camp of keeping one tank closed so if I reach the point where that tank hits empty, I will switch over to the second tank and know I need to fill the first one. My red /green indicator is not easily visible without lifting the tank cover off even if I lift the hinged cover. I am very good at judging when my active tank is nearing empty so it's rare that I actually run it dry. I like knowing I always have at least 1 full tank at all times.

Old time way.... I like one turned off too, so I'm in control.

I leave one tank turned off. Seems the open tank will always run out between 2:00 and 4:00 AM.

24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not.
