Replacing pull bar on dump tank

Half of the handle on the lever to dump the black tank broke. I ordered another one. I cannot get the old one off. The bar is simply so slick, it just turns with the handle. I’ve used tape, wet cloth, etc to grip the pliers onto the bar but no luck. I squirted liquid wrench and oil at the inside of the handle. I actually got afraid that I was going to compress the bar enough that it would break. Suggestions?

Depending on the valve, some have a small pin in the handle that you need to remove.

Yes check for a pin or set screw. If the handle is a standard screw on another option is tack weld a small piece of flat iron on the rod. Then you can use vise grips or adjustable wrench to grasp the flat iron to give you the leverage to get the handle off. My black handle is half broke off but I’ve been living with it

If the valve is old, replace the whole valve with a new one. Easy and cheap.

I did look for a pen on the end of the pull bar but I probably didn’t look underneath so I will do that. I did debate on just using it the way it is since I have half a handle but figured it would break off at the most inopportune time.
And now that I’ve watched a video on replacing the whole valve, I guess that wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility too.
Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll get back out there when it stops raining and check!
