Travel Trailer Hitch

Has anyone installed a travel trailer hitch such as curt to the back of their travel trailer? Not to the rear bumper but to the underneath of the trailer?
I have a 2019 Jayco 195RB and wanting to purchase a Honda inverter generator. Would like to mount a Curt Hitch and attach a cargo carrier. Has anyone done this?

Yes! I have a hitch welded to the frame.

My recommendation is to locate a local welding shop and have them reinforced the frame at the mounting location.

What I did to my previous trailer, a Palomino Puma, was purchase a receiver tube on Amazon that was long enough to reach under the trailer so I could use two cross members of the frame as support. Then I took it to a welding shop and they manufactured supports that went under the tube and bolted to the cross members. I also used similar supports with bolts inside the square tube bumper for a third area of attachment.
I don't know if this is a possible with your trailer as I am not familiar with it but it was very solid on this trailer.
The picture is the only one I could find. If you look close you can see the rearmost support and the bumper support. There is a third about 8 inches further under the trailer.

I had this one welded on my 2018 264BH it is perfect. One thing to note is the frame on my camper was off set to one side so you have to adjust the hitch to sit a little further one side than the other to make it look centered with the back of the camper.

Frankly I wouldn't even think of it.. The 195 has very little cargo weight available.. About 200 lb after you fill the water tanks.

The danger in overloading is that if you hit bad road start bouncing you may bend an axle.. The axle. Been there done that. Of course you could install a heavier axle. I understand you don't want the genny in your tow vehicle. We have a Ridgeline and we can put it in the back without being exposed to fumes

We travel with a Gunner Kennel in the back of our Honda Pilot. So the only place we can carry a generator is behind the TT.

What size generator? Could you use one of these instead?

Stromberg Carlson CC-255 Trailer Tray https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00U8AXRPW..._OnrmCbY9TZMPF

We haul 2 Gunner Kennels in the truck bed to keep our dogs safe when traveling so I know your pain.

What is your tow vehicle?

That tray and a 3000i would add over 200lbs to your tongue weight, and is still adding it to the trailer weight.

That's the problem and one reason we tried 2000 at first ( we had no idea if it would be enough for us). Over three years it has been.. It may not be for the OP. Lugging 46 lb units was manageable.. Not so more.

I'm plumb out of ideas. While the 195 has been a perfect fit for us we have minimal stuff as cargo coming from a tenting and backpacking background. And there are only two of us

My wife and I lift a big heavy 4000 watt generac onto the trailer tray, a 3000 should be easy. We have it bolted down and locked, so we don't move it much, regardless. For us it puts the weight in a pretty good spot.

While attaching a receiver to the frame "may not" void the warranty, subsequent damage to the frame caused by receiver most likely will. It may be advisable to contact Lippert and consult with them. This is what I would tell my RV customers. Just because you "can" do it, doesn't mean you should.

We are talking about a much smaller trailer. No matter how you dice it in a 195 cargo weight is a concern as there is almost no room for a payload. There is about 200 lbs free with a full water tank or full waste tanks. Now if the OP were not to have any food bedding or clothes there might be room for the genny.

IMO neither can you or should you attach the cargo receiver to carry the genny.. Also be advised that the back of the unit gets really grimed up as there are no mudflaps Personally I would not want to subject the generator to road sand and ice and salt.
