Want to add a second A/C unit, have some questions

Looking to add a 2nd AC to my 284BHS. Currently, 1 15K Dometic, and it struggled hard over Memorial Day being down in central TX.

I have the 50A unit with it prewired for a 2nd AC.

Can I add a 2nd 15K? The dealer says I can but someone I spoke with at camping world said that's not recommended and I should get a 13.5K. Something about overpowering and potential for breakers being flipped.

I also posted in the 284BHS Facebook group and not a single double AC owner had 2 15ks. Always 15 and 13.

I'm confused now.

A 15k is going to pull in the neighborhood of 16 amps ( comp.& fan), with two 15k in a 34' unit you'll be able to hang meat in there. Ask yourself is my A/C only doing half the job I need? I have only a 13k in my Alante which is only a few feet shorter than you, it does a halfway credible job, if and when I add a second 13k it will be like an icebox for sure.

15K with a soft-start to be safe.

Every rig that I've owned with 2 had 2 15's and never a breaker issue. JAYCO probably went 13/15 due to the size of the rig and price point would be slightly lower using the 13.

I have a JAYFLIGHT 29RKS. It’s basically the same overall length as your trailer and my second AC in the bedroom is the 13. No issues keeping my trailer cool. I’d go the least expensive route.

When it comes to sizing an A/C unit in a house or business, there is an optimal range as too much A/C capacity results in a diminished ability to remove the moisture from the air and results in less comfort for more costs. However, 28.5 vs 30k BTU's of cooling is not a significant difference where it really would make much if any difference overall.

Personally, I would go with 13.5 for the second unit that way if I found myself somewhere that didn't have 50a or even 30a, that I could still run the smaller A/C on a limited connection and keep the bedroom cool. Keep in mind though that even then, there isn't a lot of power consumption difference between a 15k vs 13.5k A/C, but there certainly is some difference, just not much difference, perhaps enough if you had a small generator to make the difference though, especially at higher elevations. ~CA

That's a good point. I don't have 50 or 30A at home. But I do have a 20A circuit that will run my single 15K. A 13.5K would be better.

Question: where are you putting the 2nd AC? I would suspect the master bedroom. If that is the case, I would go with the 13.5K. The reason, if you close the door, you could easy cause short cycling issues.

Living in Arizona I was having trouble keeping the trailer cool in the summer. I almost purchased a second AC to put in the bedroom. I saw a couple of YouTube videos on the installation of a product from RV Airflow. I decided to chance it and bought and installed one in my Coleman 15k AC. Before the install I measured the airflow from my ceiling ducts using a hand held anemometer. I was getting between 8-9mph airlow with the fan on high. After the installation I was amazed to see it had increased to between 18-19.5 mph. The trailer now cools much faster, the AC doesn't run as long, and two recent trips in 100 degree heat the AC has kept the trailer at mid to high 70's inside.

Prior to the install I checked all of my ceiling ducts for leaks, which there were many. I sealed all of them with the foil tape and now the cold air no longer is blown into the dead space between the ceiling and the roof.

I no longer need to worry about installing a second AC.
