Preinstalled awning on Jayco 1006

Hi, I own a Jayco 1006. 1992. It comes with an awning that you slide in a tab along the top of the roof once the roof is raised. It's a pain in the keester to install it once the roof is up because it's too high up to slide in and across for my wife (not me) but it is bulky and is easier to install with two people. I got to thinking why not install it before I take off and roll up the awning and fanagle some type of Velcro system straps to keep it rolled up tight when traveling and then just undo Velcro straps once the roof is raised up then all I'd have to do is add the pole system. Question: You think it would be too heavy to have on the roof when cranking the roof up? Obviously, one side of my roof would be heavier but you think it could work? All on the assumption that when rolled up and velcroed tight it wouldn't unravel when travelling. Any opinions on this? Thanks.

You didn't mention it, so I'll ask: Couldn't you stow the awning in the trailer and install it just before raising the roof?

If you do try your method, it would be good to consider something on the front end of the rolled-up awning so wind from driving wouldn't try to 'inflate' it. I'd also be reluctant to put that much faith in Velcro alone. It's kind of 'belt and suspenders' thing, but I'd also add some additional type of restraint. If the awning unrolled going down the road, it would be ruined VERY quickly.

I have no idea regarding the weight of the awning and the roof lift system.

Good luck!

I appreciate your suggestion. Maybe we'll go back to that approach. Not sure why we gave up on that.

Not sure about older popups, but new ones come with a zippered bag, so you can just leave it on the camper at all times. Perhaps you could just order the bag?

When we had the pop-up there was a bag awning that we left on the Pup. I would usually raise the roof about half-way then deploy the awning. After the roof was up all the way I would raise the poles on the awning and tie it down.

I had 2 popups and both had a bag or sleeve that the awning was sewn into permanently. Upon arrival you unzipped the awning sleeve and once up it had two Velcro straps that let it unroll. Set up the poles and stakes and done.
