RV Cover Poll

There have been some questions on RV covers over the years, so its time for a poll. To cover or NOT to cover, that is the question. Multiple choice poll. Discussion welcome.

We`re talking about the fabric covers you buy and put over your RV here, not garages, poll barns etc.

Although I don't put a cover on my travel trailer, I do put covers over the A/C and the tires. I also take heavy duty plastic garbage bags a put them inside the access covers to the fridge and the water heater, close the doors then trip off the excess. All to keep the snow, rain and other crap out of there during the off season. Other than that, it spends it's life outside right next to my '48 Willy's Jeep.

RV Cover Poll

Jaybird, what makes you question your decision to cover?

We purchased ours off Craigslist and the previous owner provided us with a cover. Although we are storing ours under a canopy, still think its a good idea to keep the reminates of winter off it with the cover.

I'm concerned with the few light "scuff" marks that we noticed when we opened it up this spring. I'm guessing we didn't have it tightened down properly. Operator error? hahahaha It still feels like the logical thing to do is cover.

We have a lot of strong winds in our area, and scuffing would be a significant problem. Therefore, no cover. We are looking into the idea of building a roof-only shed to put it under, just to keep snow and sun off, however.

RV Cover Poll

I don't cover. Wash twice a year to keep the trailer looking nice. Hate to fight with covers. Also like having my trailer ready to go without a lot of effort. We camp year round. I live where there is little to no snow and that might make a difference on whether a cover would be helping to protect the trailer in some way.

I don't even cover my tires. I know about the dry rot concern. I plan on changing all the trailer tires every 3 years. I would rather keep fresh tires on the trailer than to have a blowout and the damage it could cause plus potentially ruining a trip. Maybe overkill?

I don't have a cover but am thinking of getting one. It rains more often then not in the fall, winter and spring here. Before we bought our trailer new we checked out a number of 5 to 10 year old used ones and found water damage was common. Don't want that to happen to my new and expensive trailer.

I have had a rv cover for our old 5th wheel since we bought the trailer. I have been trying to sell it for the last 7 years with no success. I can't even seem to be able to give it away. In my opinion they are a perceived need. If they were essential they would come with each trailer from the factory.

Same here! I'll be real interested in how this one shakes out. I've wrestled with this one ever since we got our new TT in December. I had a cover for our old pop-up but I'm not sure it actually helped much.

The reason I don't cover ours is because of the corner extended drip spouts. I would think that either the spouts would break or be damaged due to the weight of the cover on them, they are just cheap plastic after all. The other concern is that if they don't break that they would cause wear on the cover to the point that it would rip or put a hole in the cover. Covers are far to $$ for me to experiment with. That said, we are now in the process of purchasing and moving to a 5 acre ranchette in the country. One of my first projects will be to erect a 3 sided metal cover about 18 X 38' to park the trailer under. Then I won't have to worry about it.

We are sitting on the fence about this as well. Living in northern Ontario the winters are pretty bad with lots of snow, so removing snow from the roof might also have to be done and a cover might make that a little tricky. Our salesman had a good point, they have 20-30 trailers sitting on the lot all winter with no covers.

Does my camper shed count as a "cover"?

No cover, but I do cover the tires on the sunny side of the trailer. Putting a cover on the a/c might be a good idea, since mine gets pretty dirty parked under oak trees

We had a business making boat covers for over 10 years. Covers are great at keeping the sun off to avoid fading, and keep the dirt and snow out. I think only an acrylic fabric like Sunbrella would last very long in the FL sun and for a 25 foot trailer, that would be kind of pricy. Coated polyester would be OK for winters in the north, but in FL, you would get 3 years tops on stitching and zippers, and maybe 5 years on the fabric. And since coated polyester fabric doesn't breath, you would mildew.

I did just make covers for my RV trailer tires, but in 40 years, I never had tire covers on my boat trailer. Go figure.
