Once grease is on the lining and magnets, your friction is gone. Grease will impregnate the lining so they must be replaced or the grease will always be there. The magnets should clean up with brake clean. Price complete brake assemblies as well as just shoes. Might be cost effective to buy complete brake assemblies.

Earl
I'm contemplating just going to a disc brake set up. If not, I would get 4 new drum assemblies. I'm definitely getting good bearings and seals either way.

Also use double lip spring loaded seals. Single lip and non spring loaded seals are leakers. If you must use the ez lube (highly discourage it!!) Use only a manual grease gun and while spinning the wheel.

jsk, how is your braking?
You have a 2017. I wonder if Lippert changed anything after a certain date.

Still good. Took 1st trip last weekend so unit was loaded. It does not stop on a dime but does pretty good considering the weight. Put it on the scales and it was 15.4k.

Here's an interesting tidbit.
I was PM'ing with grampscamper over on the Ford forum...he is a member here too, but owns a Grand Designs now. And a 2017 Supa Duty.

He said there is a huge complaint of Grand Designs with bad grease seals over on his forum.
Guess what axels the GD's have.
He said they are getting covered under warranty.
Hmmmmm....

Interesting that Jayco has gone with Dexter for 2018.

Very interesting indeed. I wonder if LCI used the cheapest seals they could find, whereas Dexter may use better ones? Who knows, I think Lippert just bought dexter so they'll probably get the same cheap seals too

Seems to be the case

No question that they're cheap! Probably on par with the tires they put on these rigs

After reading this thread, I think while I'm replacing my China bomb tires. I'll also pull my hubs and do a repacking and at least do a inner seal change on the axles. Not sold on the disc brake discussion yet, especially if they have phenolic pistons.

Yep.. they started yesterday. Should be done today.
Brakes, raise the trailer, put on the wet bolt kit.

It's been there since November 1 2016.
Besides the mentioned above...
fix the dip in the living room slide roof.
Fix the loud freight train like sound the awnings make.
Fix the seal outside above the living slide,
Fix the bent floor supports.

I'm not even sure if it was the grease.
It was only on 2 brakes.
They were still blaming me for overheating them.
Doesn't explain why I had nothing the day I bought it.
I'm thinking just **** brakes. Ending up being compounded by a grease problem sometime after.

When I pulled out this morning ..the service guy was waiting at the window. I was barely going 3 mph. Had the controller on max and had the lever squeezed. Coasted right pass him with even less brakes then before.
We both looked dumbfounded.
Only option was to go drive it.
I put on 25 miles. And then POOF I had brakes. Had to turn down to 7.5.

If you had overheated the brakes, the drums would be heat checked and the shoe lining cracked. Any good brake guy could easily spot overheated brakes. Unfortunately most RV techs aren't running gear experts.

New brakes need burnished before they will be at full performance.
