I have always used them. I have tried the el cheapo brand at Walmart and the special silicone lube for 3 times as much $$ and don't see a dimes worth of difference. IMO, the important thing is to use something and wipe them down as best you can from time to time with a clean cloth. Some areas are unreachable.
