Reminds me of a news story I read about 20 years or so ago. There was a province in China that was experiencing natural gas thefts. Apparently the thieves were using large rolls of plastic bag material to steal the gas. They would unroll about 30 feet of bag, tie off one end and fill the bag at the other end, then tie that end off. The authorities discovered this method when they responded to a large explosion in a neighborhood. One of the thieves was dragging 2 of those bags, while smoking a cigarette. One of the bags tore open with the expected result.
Needless to say, that particular thief's career came to a permanent end on that day...

There's an article on MSN about someone in Florida that put some 5 gallon cans of gas in the back of their H2 Hummer, then drove away while lighting a cigarette. No one was hurt, but they're going to need another Hummer now!

Full disclosure: When I was young and stupid (I like to think "was" anyway), I ran my Jeep out of gas. Called my roommate to come bring me some gas. He didn't have a gas can, so he grabbed a milk jug and brought me (almost) a gallon of gas. I kind of looked at him like "you're crazy dude", but it was enough for me to get to the gas station, and he rescued me, so I wasn't going to complain... That's about as stupid as I ever got with gasoline...

Of course, those were the days you could scrape together the change from your ash tray to buy some gas, which I admittedly have done, moments after literally coasting into a fuel station on my way to school. Actually, that was enough to hold me over a couple days until pay day back then...

I had a friend years ago that was seriously burned when he went to pick up a plastic milk jug that was half full of gas. The static electricity caused it to explode, and melted his nylon shirt to his body, among other injuries. He spent a long time in a full upper body cast, with his arm propped out to his side. He never put gas in a milk jug again.

He claimed he never had that happen in the past, so thought it wasn't a danger. I'll never forget seeing him in so much agony.

I just think people are too "complacent" around gasoline. It's actually pretty darn dangerous if not handled correctly, and I just don't think people give that enough respect. It seems the warnings around gas pumps have just become so much "visual noise"; people don't really even see them anymore it seems.

Stories like the milk jug, the plastic bags, the drinking water bottles, etc. And people still don't pay attention. It can get downright scary out there.

I used to think it wasn't a big deal to fill up a portable jug that was sitting in the bed of a truck (instead of on the ground). But even that seemingly innocent act can cause serious injury to persons and property.

FWIW, I have never since my milk jug episode transported fuel except in an approved container. And I ALWAYS take the container out and put it on the ground.

We were actually caught on the road by pipeline shutdown. We’d been out 2-1/2 weeks and were returning yesterday from visiting daughter in Orlando. Stopped at a Pilot on I-95 that had gas. Although I could have made it home, I avoid getting below 1/4 tank. If I breakdown I want to be able to run the generator. Did not want to be greedy so didn’t fill up. Put enough in it stay above 1/4 tank.

The Pilot station had organized their fuel pumps for one-way traffic to make it more efficient and move faster. Seeing that, I made a U-turn in their lot (not easy in the Greyhawk) and got into line. I saw an SUV literally blast in through the parking lot exit and dart into a space at a pump an instant after the car there pulled out and before the next guy could move up. When he got out the employee told him he was going the wrong way and he should get in line. He very belligerently and loudly yelled, “I don’t see any sign saying that!” and began filling up. As Bugs Bunny would observe, “What a maroon!”

The gas buddy site is overwhelmed because we are in Myrtle Beach and the site shows many without diesel or gas but even most of the ones they show with diesel are in fact out.

I finally found a Kroger grocery that was swamped but has regular and diesel. We were thinking we might have to stay longer but now we can eat some Calabash seafood before heading home on Sunday.

Because of all the craziness with the gas and long lines at the stations that still have product we chose to duck out of this trip. Will go another time. Driving a 33 ft long class C pulling a Jeep is hard enough in great conditions at some stations. North Carolina still a mess

colonial pipeline

I live in Suffolk, Va. Have brother in law with cottage at KDH. They saying gas not big issue. They are there now. I would fill up when available. I canceled my trip to Staunton this week for fear of fuel shortage. Here fuel is available.

We left Sunday and drove to Outer Banks from Kentucky without issue. Brought the truck because I was worried about the gas shortage. No issues at all with diesel, but did see a couple places the only had regular grade on the gas side.

NC gas

Here in the Southern Outer Banks, Morehead City area, no issue with gas other than being 20 cents higher than 2 weeks ago(now$2.85 per gallon +/-). Daughter in Raleigh same situation, no issue. Had visitors drive up to NE on Sunday after a visit and had no issue getting gas, just more expensive.

Gas stations in Northern VA all look back to normal. I’m along the 95N and S corridor. I wouldn’t cancel my road-trip. 10 of us roll out Sat for SC. No worries here.

My friends reporting from Cape Hatteras yesterday said all was fine there.
