Oregon Coast in the Winter

Planning on a trip end of January, early February. Pulling a 23' travel trailer. Any suggestions on roads/hi-ways to the coast from Interstate 5. We took 128 during the summer but am not sure I want to do that during the Winter. Any recommendations on RV parks along the coast would be appreciated. We are interested in watching the waves hit the rocks.

We live on the Oregon Coast and our preferred cross over from I5 is Hwy38. I am assuming you meant Hwy126 when you traveled before, which isnt bad during the winter but like I said, Hwy38 is better as it has lots of passing lanes and areas to pull over and take a break. If you are coming for wave watching then I highly suggest Shore Acres State park, one of the best spots on the Oregon Coast

There's no camping in Shore Acres state park but you can camp in Sunset Bay just up the road.

If you come up I-5 from the Bay area and thinking about cutting over on Hwy 299, be sure to check the Caltrans interactive travel map. There are portions with limited traffic from the wildfire this summer. Highway 199 from Grants Pass, Ore., is an easy cut-over. The only tight section is toward the end, just before you get to 101. You’ll be fine with your size TT.

Also, if you are thinking of staying in an Oregon State Park, the reservation window opens six months out. Act quick, they are popular. Oh, and starting this year, you’ll pay a 25 percent surcharge as a non-resident.

If you do visit the State Park be sure you park in the last parking lot ( near the restrooms) and take the opening directly across the road to the path that leads down to the water & hidden beach area. You’ll probably be the only ones there and the only thing you’ll hear are the waves lapping in so bring a lunch and enjoy.
If you enlarge the map you’ll see my lines and the top pic is at High Tide if you stay at Sunset Bay there are 4 sections and the first one is the oldest & that restroom is the same and there are (I believe) 3-4 restrooms & the last 2 are a (10)

Sunset Bay is a nice park. Small but nice. It’s an easy walk down to Sunset Beach as well.

Rustynuts, on our way to shore acres. Thanks! Fellow traveler just suggested that we hit 199 on the way home rather than going back up to 38. But he is from Arizona so I thought I'd get an expert opinion! Thanks.

You’ll see a lot more Oregon coast that way than you will going up to 38 and over to I-5 and back down. And most of 199 is scenic as well.

Just depends on what kind of driver you want to make. South on 101 will give you an ocean view from Port Orford on down but that section has some pretty rough spots. Hwy 199 is a beautiful drive but narrow and a very curvy road, take a look at in maps or Google earth. Back up to 38 will be a faster, smoother but less scenic drive. I drove 199 in our old class A and it was a white knuckle drive.

JW, if you are comfortable towing your your 23MRB on less-than-freeway roads, you should be fine on 199. The only tight section is about 20 miles just south of the Oregon border into California. Winding and two lanes, so don’t be in a hurry. The rest is cake. Like Nuts discovered, driving a Class A or large fiver would be more of an “adventure.” But there are a lot of ‘em.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread, we took most of your suggestions. Visited multiple parks and view points on the coast and will take 199 back. When we are driving we are never in a hurry; on 128 saw someone who was in a hurry and luckily he survived a head on collision. My concern on narrow roads is always the other person who is in a hurry.
