Estes national park is only 30 miles west of Loveland.

Huge thank you LuckyDuck! We went to the Lamar Valley today (after your recommendation). Saw lots of Bison/Buffalo, a jack rabbit, 2 black bears, a grisly bear, 4 wolves, elk, and a couple deer that tried to commit suicide!

Dan, you are welcome. That section of the park is stunningly beautiful and the best place to see the animals you mentioned. Hope you saw some of the bison and elk calves, too. Cute! Actually the suicidal “deer “ is a pronghorn — neither deer nor antelope and the fastest animal in the Western Hemisphere! https://nhpbs.org/natureworks/pronghorn.htm#1

I had no idea what they were! I knew they were too small to be antelope. We saw LOTS of babies! One of the black bears had 2 cubs with her. The grizzly was a male (according to the ranger) and was HUGE! I was glad he was across the lake from us!

Thanks for the detail on Yellowstone. We stayed for 8 days 2 years ago and are going back this year. We visited the Visitor Center too but were not smart enough to ask where to see the animals (though we saw a lot). We loved Larmar valley in the early A.M., saw wolves there everyday.
