Ammonia in water tank

Soooooo.... I didn't realize but i grabbed ammonia instead of bleach and poured a half cup into my water tank as i was summerising it today.

anyone have any thoughts on this? I don't see much online.

i noticed about half an hour after i poured it in to let it sit over night. Im currently emptying it out and I'm going to flush it out. and then sanatize properly with bleach in a day or two.

just flush it out well as soon as you can, and it should be fine. Don't run it through the pump or plumbing, to keep it isolated to the tank. Open the fresh water tank drain valve, and run water into the tank like you're filling it, like you said.

I would be careful with the bleach until the tank has been well flushed. Ammonia and bleach can be nasty.

Absolutely. It’s one of those over the counter concoctions that can be a force equalizer.

unfortunately i did run it through the sink already, as thats part of my sanitizing process. Ive been running lots of water through it. i may just use vinegar instead as I am a little leery of mixing bleach in there with the ammonia. my drain for my tank isn't right at the bottom of the tank either so theres always a little water in there and i can't drain it completely.

thanks for the replies!

Fill, dilute and flush. Repeat until you don't smell either. You are talking small amounts but still take care as the fumes can be dangerous. I would also ventilate the rig while all this filling and flushing is in progress.

Pure Vinegar will neutralize the ammonia.

Yep.

You could flip the valves to Winterize and pull several gallons of vinegar thru the lines and taps.

But I wouldn't bother pouring gallons of it into the FW tank. I'd just flush a few times and it would be fine. Like Norty said, you're talking small amounts. One half cup in a how many gallons? 30, 40 or more?

Your mistake wasn't nearly as bad as one I read about in another rvforum. That person dumped a bottle of Aqua-Kem black tank treatment into his fresh water tank. One of the ingredients of that stuff is formaldehyde.
