New Garmin GPS RV 1090

Has anyone seen the advertisement for the new Garmin RV 1090 GPS Navigator? It is a 10" screen and list for around $700. I got the RV 890 for Christmas which is an 8" screen and it is ginormous. I have a 10" tablet and in my opinion would be a bit overkill as a navigation tool. What do you think (come on don't be shy)

I just bought the Garmin RV 785 yesterday from Amazon for $405. It has a built in Dash Cam, whereas the 10” doesn’t have. I currently have an older Garmin with a dash cam and it is a great addition to the GPS. It has the same features as the 10”, such as voice activated navigation, blue tooth features, traffic receiver, weather, etc. It will arrive Friday...can’t wait. The 10” seems a big too big for me, plus it doesn’t come with a dash cam.

I received an email from Garmin advertising it, and the price scared me. The nav in the truck works just fine for now.

I have been thinking about getting the 785 so can you comment on how you like it?

Well I’m still learning all of its features, but it works great. My truck doesn’t have Bluetooth or any of the other fancy stuff found on today’s vehicles, but the Garmin has Bluetooth so now I have a hands free phone connection to my cell phone. It also has hands free operation as far a searching for phone numbers, addresses, places, etc. It also has every campground I have searched for and it will show all of the amenities that’s available. Best thing you could do to see all of the features is go to the Garmin website and download the owner’s manual.

The camera takes excellent videos that starts recording as soon as you start the engine.

Great I have been eyeing this for some time now I have a a couple of Amazon gift money so it wouldn't be much out of pocket for me, I think I will go to Garmin website and download the manual to look at it some more. Thank you and if you can add more on what's you like about it please do so.

A neat feature I forgot to mention is that it also has the ability to connect to WiFi. So when I'm home I can connect it to my home WiFi and check and download any updates without having to connect it to my computer.

One thing I always do to all of my GPS units is drive to the police station and set it as my "Home". I use my dogs name as the location of my house. That way if some crook steals my truck...with the garage door opener inside...and hits the Go Home button, he will wind up in the police station parking lot.

The 785 works great. I like the "avoid toll roads" feature. There is an app for the PC on Garmins's site (free app) where you can download the trips in the 785 and see exactly where you have been. It shows the speeds you were going also. The free app is called Basecamp.

My issue with the Garmins I've tried is what seems to be something that would be pretty simple to do, avoid parkways. I had a unit (don't remember the model number) but even after loading in the height of the trailer it still tried to route me through parkways with overpasses too low for the trailer to pass. Beyond that even if the overpasses were passable it's illegal to take a trailer on them. The unit allowed you to manually eliminate sections of road but that became a real hassle to accomplish given the criss-crossing of highways and parkways in my area. And there was no way to eliminate a road by name or number.

I took a look at Basecamp but I couldn't figure it out, so do I plan my trip on the Garmin 785 and then upload it to the Basecamp software?

I returned the newer unit and I’m using one that is six or seven years old with the latest map update. Of course I’m responsible for the avoidance of low overpasses and parkway avoidance but I need a unit that either does that well or not at all.

I'm with you on that one on my last trip from Washington State go to Las Vegas NV we were driving down I-90 going toward ID and my gps I think it was google map took us off of I-90.

Now going the way I knew google map didn't take me that way it took us of of the Interstate which I didn't like so I went with google map, and man we was in the back road with nothing around but farm area.

Neediest to say I didn't like going that way because their was no gas station around for miles but it was a thing that I had just fill up with diesel fuel. The wife didn't like going that way either so I got out my I old garmin gps out. I also have Waze on my Android Plus so I really two back up but yeah you really have to watch some of these gps, because they will take you down the wrong road.

Amazon has 785 RV for $389 right now. This is what I have. I paid $404 for mine from Amazon. I bought this one mainly because it has a built in dash cam.
