stink in my water
Hey folks, we are staying in our camper while we are building our house, recently the water has started to smell pretty bad when you turn the water on the smell goes away in about a minute or so, so i am thinking my water lines need to be cleaned, i was thinking i could go through the winterize process with a bleach/water clean,
any thoughts ???

Smell like rotten eggs? If so there are a number of recommendations via Google. Common problem by the way if that is what it is.

Don't forget to check the filter in front of the 12 volt pump for crud. I would flush it first and then sanitize with chlorox including the lines and pump. The how water heater is often the source and I would sanitize it cold, flush and then run it to full heat before draining.

Rotten egg smell is common from hot water tank.. try to isolate smell betwen hot and cold water,. If you notice i on hot water and not cold water, smell is coming from your hot water tank. If visa versa then your cold water tank.. I suspect the hot water tank.. Should go away after a couple good uses,.

Specifically, what smell are you getting? That might help with an answer.

You probably need to pull the filter, sanitize the entire system and replace the filter.
The best way to do that is to fill the tank and while that is happening add the recommended amount of chlorine for the size of the system. (40 gals/1/4 cup chlorine) Let it sit for three hours or more and then flush the entire system. When you do that be sure the filter is out of the line and then add the new filter before recharging the system. You may have a chlorine smell and taste for a bit that that will go away with time.
It really is necessary that you use the fresh water tank to run this process since it is likely that it too has mold or bad water sitting in the tank.

Bacteria in the tank reacting with the magnesium anode rod can give off a nasty smell.

Possible the tank is gunky if the water sits in it long enough. Never had that happen.

Not sure anyone asked, but did you check the condition of the water at the hose connection to the camper? As in take a sample by disconnecting from the camper and allow a small amount into a glass to smell or taste it.
Basically, could be your hose. Sitting out in the nice hot sun and cooking some mold/bacteria/whatever.

Another factor - how hot is it where you are staying? We drain our hot water tank after each campout. Noticed it coming from the cold water and started paying attention to the outside temps. If temps hit 90 & higher, we definitely get the smell from the cold water. Since we are now in the low to mid 70's during the day we haven't had any issue with the smell. And yes, we changed our filter & still had the smell. There are so many different potential causes and trying to narrow it down is frustrating.

Never had that problem and we certainly can see temps at 90+ in Arizona. As long as water is being used it will not sit in the hot water tank or lines long enough to cause smells.
If your water smells like something other than water, you have an issue in the hot water tank or lines. If you are using the onboard storage tank there could be an issue there.
Sanitize the system and if you are still having issues look at an outside source.
