Another camper fire

In our local news....

A camper towed behind a truck was completely destroyed in a fire on Winnipeg's Perimeter Highway on Sunday, but RCMP say no one was hurt.
Witnesses saw the camper go up in flames around 3 p.m. on Sunday in the eastbound lanes of the Perimeter Highway near the McPhillips Street overpass.
"It was incredibly hot. I could feel the heat through the wall of my truck as I passed," said Tyler Robb, who stopped to check and see if everyone was okay.
At that point no emergency vehicles were present, he said.
The fire was quickly extinguished, RCMP said.

Does anyone have a follow up on the story that may indicate the cause?

On Aug. 17th, they made a correction to the story, but no update.

Me too! This fire has really sparked my interest as to the cause and prevention.

The trouble is that with stories like this there is seldom any follow up. The cause of the fire may take some time to determine, and even then it may be the insurance company that finds the cause. And they aren't going to share that with a reporter.

There was no follow up posted by the media outlets, but my guess would be the brakes. I've towed through that section of highway. Several cloverleafs and merging lanes, so I'm thinking it was faulty brakes that didn't release when the driver slowed down to negotiate the ramps. Depending on the size/weight of the camper and the power of the truck -- it looks like either a F250 or F350, based on the picture -- he may not have noticed the extra drag, nor the smoke in his mirrors. I was also towing my trailer on that particular day, and it was very windy. so he might have thought the drag was just the wind.
