I would have a hard time doing a engine swap these days. The kids that I work with, change motors and hot rod them all the time. I guess it goes with the young and people who keep up with the technology.

Wowsers!!! The engine swap is running just over $10k! Reman engine not as inexpensive as I had hoped. New intake, water pump, plugs, and other stuff. But at least when all said and done, be like new and comes with 3 year/100,000 miles warranty on parts and labor.

Took the Class B CDL tests at the SOS today and passed with flying colors. Aced the air brakes test and missed 3 out of 50 on the other test. Now it's getting the permit ($25), Chauffeur classification ($35), DOT physical ($90), and Class B 1 day class/skills test (wanna guess how much?).
Big problem at the moment is I can't find my birth certificate. Need it for the SOS. Guess standing right in front of them is not good enough proof. ;O)

If you don't mind me asking, is that through a dealer or an independent shop?

It's through a Jasper certified Napa Auto Care shop.

I haven't priced a Jasper in a while, but they must be factoring $4000+ labor correct?

$10,000 is a lot, but i guess it is cost increases.
Don't know if this is correct for your truck, but Summitt Racing has this, sturgissteele:

Check the better business bureau on the engines, some are rated F and some are rated A

Yes sir. So happy to have found them before they became an issue. My 16-year old daughter drives that truck occasionally and it sort of bothers me a little to see stuff like that knowing that she gets behind the wheel.

We're looking at $5,533 for the Jasper and $2,450 labor (give or take some) then plus a new intake at $694, new boots & plugs, new water pump & thermostat, solenoid, yada, yada, yada, plus some supplies and sales tax. All in all, parts estimated $7,545 and labor $2,450. But, it does come with a 3 year/100,000 mile warranty, parts & labor. He factored in some cushion of like $500, but I suppose it will be eaten up somewhere along the way.
Bit bummed, my $20k truck is going to be a $30k truck and I'll never get that much out of it in the future. Had I known I was going to spend $30k in the beginning, I would have just bought a much newer truck!

Thanks! Got the physical done today and tried calling the place I need to get a certified birth cert., but they didn't return my call as of yet.
Just found out some good news, though; my boss said, "keep the receipts and I'll reimburse you for your physical and class." Saawweeet!

I guess the labor isn't too bad. Going rate around here is ~$1000-$1200 for an independent shop to R&R and engine. 2x that isn't necessarily that bad at a chain store. Did they give you an hour estimate or just a flat rate?
I'd hang a little question on that $2000 for misc parts. That seem like a lot to me for all of the extras.
Sorry in general to hear about your truck though. As you said, it isn't what you expected to be doing so soon after purchase.

An hourly rate, I believe.
As much as I would like to R&R the engine, the DW really hates that this is happening. We feel I got a bit duped when I purchased it, you know? I didn't know to listen for that problem, and at the time, the manifold gasket was leaking and the muffler system was shot, so any chance of hearing a slight tick was all but impossible; it only really became apparent when the temps dove to around 50F.
Shoot, I could take it really easy driving this truck, wait until Spring/Summer and unload it to someone else. But I can't in good conscious pass this expensive fix to someone else without disclosure, which means, good luck selling the truck at all.
It is fortunate the body of the truck is really quite good given it's going on 12 years old. It's lacking some bells and whistles, sure would've liked a 2014 or newer in that regard. Putting $10k into this, I would hope to get another 10 years, or better, out of it though. But thinking of $30k spent for 10+ years of use seems so much. Might be different if I had way too much money on hand, but that's not the case!
