Neighbor Dispute - Bacon Problem

Camping at a public campground - sites are fairly close but not on top of each other. Cooking breakfast this morning as I always do. Had a pound of bacon cooking on the Blackstone when the people in the next site came out and asked me not to cook bacon because the smell bothers them. I apologized and politely explained that there was nothing I could do about the smell.

Apparently unsatisfied with my answer they engaged campground management. I was actually approached by an employee who restated the neighbors complaint however, he added that besides the smell bothering them, it's now a religious issue for them. My response to the employee was the same as to the campers. I'm sorry but it is what it is. The employee then offered to move US to a different site. I politely refused as we have been here for the week. If anyone should move it should be the folks complaining. I was told I need to be more willing to resolve this problem. I simply refuse to change my site or do anything different. I'm doing nothing other than making breakfast.

Sorry for the rant but I am having a very difficult time being blamed for being the problem here when in my mind I have done nothing wrong....

Sad! I would have apologized and told them I’d begin cleaning up now - then finished my breakfast.

Where?

I totally agree. If the smells from various foods bother you camping is not the activity to engage in. Stay in the house.

You did nothing wrong. Sounds like you politely stated your case.

Thier issues are not your problem.

Hmmmm. Anyone with a pork problem shouldn't be camping in the first place. I think between sausage, bacon, smokers and so on, cooking pork is a requirement for a good stay anywhere. You were way more polite than I would have been. Simply put, it's not your problem and I would have suggested they take up boondocking.

Coming to a campground with the melting pot of life will make it tough to dictate the lifestyles of others if the others are living within the guidelines of the park rules. As a Christian, there have been clothing, loud curse jokes and music from nearby campsites that I've had to tolerate. Food choices have NEVER been on my radar of dislikes. Oh well. I wish I had bacon right now.

You did nothing wrong. The country is being taken over by "Karens", who can't keep their nose out of other people's business..

BTW, I love bacon, I'll be right over!

I've been on the complaining end of something similar. The smoke from the neighbors smoker was so thick it was impossible for us to stay around our camper. It set off our smoke detector twice. After explaining the issue they adjusted the dampers to produce more smoke and laughed. The staff refused to get involved saying they were just cooking and we should adapt.

We eventually forfeited two nights fees and left.

You should ask the employee to show you exactly what campground rule you were violating. If you were not (as you and I both know you weren't), then tell him have a good day and go back to cooking.

I'm all for being kind and respecting others, but other people have to be reasonable too.

Neighbor Dispute - Bacon Problem

Crazy stuff. May not be the case here, but this is the kind of thing I worry about as more people get into RV’s to avoid hotels/covid. Camping or whatever you call it is a different beast than hotel travel wether it’s an RV park or state park. As much as we like to fantasize we’re getting away from it all, we’re not. We’re in close proximity to neighbors and need to practice some tolerance. I live in suburbia and comparatively when I camp, I see more of my neighbors and in many cases am closer to them. These people probably didn’t get the memo on that. I’ve had to tolerate lights, music I don’t like, people that burn anything and everything in their fire pit, those walking through my site. This list go’s on and on. Edit... people have had to tolerate me as well.

You did the right thing. If you were to shut it down, that would be the new norm, and these people would expect it everywhere they go. I only make bacon camping. I’d sure miss that.

I would think the folks who don't like bacon should be the ones to move.

Or just zip the lip (the complainers) since the cooking will be over sooner than later...just sayin.

Thank you all for listening. I stood my ground and the "offended" folks moved on. Their site is now empty. It turns out that they had a problem with the people on the other side of them as well. I spoke with them after the other camper left and it turns out we are both retired law enforcement officers and are each flying a blue line flag in addition to our American flags. Sadly it looks like the issue may have been about more than just cooking bacon. Park management did speak to both of us and let us know they appreciated the patience we showed.

Thanks again for the replies and validation on how we handled this unique situation..

Not to thread hijack, but what is the proper etiquette to dump your black tank with the clear 90 degree end so the effluent is visible to your camp neighbors while they're having breakfast at the picnic table? Gotta have a good rinse and dump again.
Not much you can do about that, either.

Good advice for us all. That’s the practice I’ve been working on. I’ve not yet perfected this.

Must be cold up in NY already to get those snowflakes.

If the campground made me move I would have gone to Costco for more bacon and cooked so much the whole campground would smell it.

Could have left a plate of cooked bacon on their doorstep as a gesture of friendship. Of course that gesture would probably just be a finger salute.

I would have cooked another pound and then put the pork butt on the smoker for a good 10 hour BBQ.
