Marinco detachable power cord modification

Today, I installed the Marinco detachable shore power cord, which replaces the hard wired shore power. It wasn't a hard mod at all. I work slower than most, so it took me probably 60 minutes.

I'll add a few pictures, although they will probably show up, upside down or sideways. In preparation, I looked at 3 different videos on You Tube to get familiar with the process.

Before starting, I unplugged the shore power cord obviously. But I also detached the negative ground on the battery.

you will be glad you did this mod. beats the heck out of feeding cord into the mousehole. This was one of the very first things I did on my 2016 Jayco when I bought it. So much nicer.

yes I know. Feeding that cord into the mouse hole was difficult, and when it was in the 40's, really hard because the cord got really, really stiff.

The other plus is not having to worry about the cord gettin in a knot inside the compartment, and then not being able to get the full amount cord out.

Looks good! I did this same conversion at the beginning of this season - your pictures look almost the same as the ones I took. Now you've gone from knocking your knuckles raw to worrying did I forget to stow the shore power cord as you fly down the freeway at 60....

For others considering this procedure, a great complementary mod that can and should be done at the same time if the budget allows is to install a progressive hard-wired EMS into the now vacant cord storage area behind the mouse hole. Might as well kill two birds with one stone and do them together while things are apart.

The storage behind my mouse hole is very hard to get to. In fact, I still don't know how to find it. For that reason, I'll just continue to use my portable one.

I did this to a trailer I had 10 years ago after I watched a whole army of ants crawl up the warm cord into my camper!

And that's another good reason for making the mod.

Thank you for sharing. I will have to look into this change over. I liked that kind of plug in our Rockwood camp trailer.

What did it cost to do this?

That's a nice mod. If only to keep the bugs out.

A better fitting was developed for boats, as the old style plug has some limitations, primarily a small amount of surface area where contact is made. It conducts electricity reasonably well, but is prone to thermal issues because of the small surface area and can result in boat fires.

The plug is just for the boat/RV, not the pedestal where you plug in. It can be purchased as a cord with the plug already installed, or as a plug that can be retro-fitted to an existing cord. I installed one on my sailboat four years ago and have been happy with it.

Not saying this is what others should do, but offering this info strictly as FYI.

When I bought my 30 amp kit in January from Dyers RV Parts Online it was $78. I see it's up to $90 there now which is what Amazon is charging. The 50 amp kit is ~$170.

Mine cost $81.61 from Amazon. Included tax but I chose the free shipping. At that same time, CW had it on sale for the same price ($85+) when including freight. Don't know the CW price now.

If I hadn't already added my Marinco kit, I'd think about that one.

I did notice, however, that the new outlet that goes on the RV is square, and may be a problem matching up to the large hole that's in most RV's currently.

Did this on my 23RLSW. Changed the factory jack knife sofa(POS) at the same time to a Recliner from a furniture store. Just the 2 of us so we didn't need the extra sleeping cap
