New owner! Need some questions answered!

Hello! I purchased a 1998 Jayco Eagle Lite 256 last January. I put some work into it to make it look really nice but I’ve run into some issues mechanically.
First, my pilot light went out while my wife and I were asleep in it and we woke up to a dense smell of propane. This is quite concerning because for one the lp detector never went off and also I have no clue where the pilot light is located. So my first question is where can I access the pilot to relight it? And why might the detector not have worked? It tests fine and it’s loud as anything.
Second, I have some loose plumbing and wires under the bed where the tank is. Does anyone have a diagram that may help me get it resituated under there? I’ve looks for manuals but this seems to be a rare model or something because there is no information about it anywhere.
Also, are there any potential concerns I should have with this particular model (or comparable ones)? I want to get this thing as tip-top shape as possible and do any preventative maintenance before anything happens to it.
Any help is appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Welcome to the Forum from Western New York State!

First, I would check for a date stamped on the back of your propane detector. They only have a five year lifespan before needing replacing. It may sound off on the test button but won't detect propane if too old.

Unfortunately, with a 26-year-old unit, you probably aren't going to find information on it easily, if at all as you've found out. Manufacturers purge schematics from their computers after a few years. I wish you good luck with your RV.

I didn't think there were any pilot lights in a trailer, everything I've seen has some sort of "glow" or spark ignition. Sure you didn't maybe bump a burner knob on the stove?

Some pictures of the plumbing & wires might help to diagnose what you are asking since there probably isn't any schematics available for a rig this old.

On a 26 year old rig you likely have a pilot on the hot water heater and the fridge.

Both need some preventative maintenance and the lp/co detector may need replacing. The internet is the source for maintenance instructions for the appliances in your rig.

I don't remember when pilot lights went away in RV's (still used for the oven I believe). However, they have had "thermocouples" for as long as I can remember which is in part of the component that you have on the gas valve to keep pressed for ~1 minute after lighting the pilot light and if the pilot light does go out, then the thermocouple is supposed to turn off the gas flow to the pilot light.

My suggestion, replace your LP/CO detector and while you are ordering a replacement, also order an LP gas leak probe detector as the leak could be almost anywhere (gas lines) and not necessarily a pilot light, in fact, I suspect what you smelled is likely not a blown out pilot light unless you smelled it for a very short time, perhaps a minute or two (due to the thermocouple). ~CA
